Why SATA at very high capacity makes sense
The instinct is that a drive this large deserves SAS. Sometimes it does. Often it does not, and the reason is what these drives are actually used for.
High-capacity nearline storage is overwhelmingly sequential. Backup targets write large streams. Archives are written once and read rarely. Surveillance recording is continuous sequential write. Media and object storage tiers move large files. In none of these does the workload generate the deep concurrent command queues that make SAS worth paying for.
What these workloads do need is capacity per pound, and that is where SATA wins. At 14TB the price difference between SATA and SAS on the same mechanism is not trivial across a fully populated shelf.
The SAS argument strengthens where you have redundant controllers needing dual-port path redundancy, or where the array serves production traffic during rebuilds. If neither applies, SATA at this capacity is the sensible choice rather than a compromise.

At 14TB, rebuild time is the design constraint
This is the specification that should shape your array design, and it is not on the spec sheet.
When a drive fails, the array reconstructs the missing data by reading every remaining drive. That time scales with capacity. On a 1TB drive it is hours. On 14TB it can run well beyond a day depending on RAID level, controller and how busy the system is during the process.
Throughout that window three things are true simultaneously: the array has no redundancy left in a single-parity scheme, every surviving drive is under sustained read load, and a second failure means data loss. Sustained load on ageing drives is precisely the condition that provokes a second failure.
RAID 5 with 14TB members is widely considered inadvisable for this reason. RAID 6 or an equivalent double-parity scheme, which survives a second failure during rebuild, is the appropriate choice at this capacity. Some operations go further and use triple parity or erasure coding at scale.
A spare on the shelf matters more here than anywhere. A rebuild cannot start until a replacement drive is physically present, so every hour spent waiting on delivery extends the exposure window.

In bulk storage, the number that actually governs cost is not price per drive but usable capacity per rack unit, because rack space, power and cooling are all ongoing costs.
A 4U enclosure with twenty-four 14TB drives holds substantially more than the same enclosure filled with 4TB drives, on the same power draw and in the same footprint. Over a three-year period the difference in facility cost often exceeds the difference in drive cost.
That is the case for consolidating onto fewer, larger drives — and the counter-argument is the rebuild exposure covered above. The balance point for most operations is high-capacity drives with double parity and adequate spares, rather than either extreme.
Bare drive, generic chassis
This is the manufacturer part with no server carrier and no OEM firmware coding. It is the right choice for Supermicro builds, white-box storage servers, JBOD enclosures and NAS units using generic trays, and it costs less than an OEM-branded drive built on the same mechanism.
