Ultrastar Performance and Capacity Drives
HGST built the Ultrastar line around two very different jobs. The 15K and 10K SAS drives in this range, including the 300GB and 600GB 15K models and the 600GB 10K HUC106060CSS601, are small form factor disks meant for databases, virtual machine datastores and any array where access time decides performance. The 4TB HUS726T4TALS204 is the opposite: a 3.5-inch 7200 RPM SAS nearline drive where cost per terabyte and continuous duty matter more than latency.
HGST Part Numbers Under Western Digital
Western Digital acquired HGST in 2012 and kept the Ultrastar name, so the same drive can appear in documentation under an HGST model code, a Western Digital code or a short 0B or 0F number. The HUS and HUC prefixes encode the drive family, capacity, interface and sector format, and array controllers often check that detail. Matching the full string, not just the capacity, is the reliable way to get a drive the controller accepts on the first attempt.
Choosing Between the Two
If you are filling a small form factor chassis for a transactional workload, stay with the 15K or 10K models. For backup targets and bulk storage, the nearline drive gives far more capacity per slot.
