The NetApp X287A-R5
The X287A-R5 is a 300GB 15K RPM Fibre Channel drive in the 3.5-inch form factor, used in NetApp disk shelves attached to FAS storage controllers. The X number identifies the drive and shelf compatibility, and the R5 suffix marks the RoHS compliant revision. These shelves were deployed widely in enterprise data centres and many are still carrying production data long after the platform left NetApp's active sales list.
Why a Standard Fibre Channel Disk Will Not Work
NetApp formats its drives with a larger sector size than standard server disks, using the extra space for checksum data that protects against silent corruption, and it loads its own firmware onto each drive. A mechanically identical Fibre Channel disk from a server vendor lacks both, so Data ONTAP will not add it to an aggregate. That is the reason NetApp spares are priced and stocked separately from general enterprise drives.
Keeping Legacy Shelves Running
For older FAS installations, holding at least one cold spare per shelf type is standard practice, because a second failure during a long rebuild is the real risk.
