Where SATA Makes Sense in the Data Centre
SATA drives use a simpler single port interface than SAS, which keeps their price per terabyte lower. For single path storage such as backup servers, NAS appliances, surveillance recorders, boot mirrors and entry level servers, that trade off is entirely reasonable. The drives in this range are enterprise or nearline class, meaning they are built for continuous operation and use firmware that reports errors quickly to a RAID controller rather than stalling on retries the way desktop disks do.
From Legacy Spares to High Capacity
At the capacity end sit the 14TB WD Ultrastar 0F38785 and the 8TB and 6TB Seagate Exos drives. In the middle are 1TB to 4TB nearline units such as the IBM 81Y9878 simple swap drive, the Lenovo 4XB0G88761 and the Toshiba MG04ACA200NY. For older systems there are 250GB to 750GB replacements including the WD RE WD2503ABYZ and Seagate Barracuda ES.2, plus the 80GB Hitachi Travelstar for 2.5-inch legacy devices. Interface speeds are 3Gb/s or 6Gb/s, and SATA III drives work on SATA II ports at the lower speed.
