RDIMM vs LRDIMM vs UDIMM
Registered DIMMs (RDIMM) buffer address and command signals, which lets a server address far more memory than unbuffered modules allow, and they are what most rack servers require. Load-reduced DIMMs (LRDIMM) buffer the data lines as well, enabling the highest capacities per channel for memory-heavy virtualisation and in-memory database hosts. Unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMM) are used in workstations and entry servers. These types cannot be mixed within a server, and installing the wrong one usually means the system will not POST at all.
ECC and Why Servers Require It
Error-correcting code memory detects and repairs single-bit errors before they reach the operating system. On a workstation a memory error causes a crash; on a database or virtualisation host it can cause silent data corruption that goes unnoticed for weeks. Every production server platform requires ECC memory, and consumer modules will not work in them.
Population Rules and Compatibility
Memory performance depends on populating channels evenly and respecting the ranks-per-channel limits of your CPU generation - a server filled with the correct total capacity in the wrong slots will run at a lower speed.
