Enterprise vs Nearline Drives
Enterprise 10K and 15K RPM drives are built for transactional workloads - databases, virtualisation hosts and anything where access latency matters more than raw capacity. Nearline 7200 RPM drives trade speed for capacity and cost per terabyte, which makes them the correct choice for backup targets, archives, surveillance storage and bulk file serving. Matching the drive class to the workload is the single biggest factor in getting the storage decision right.
SAS, SATA and Fibre Channel Interfaces
SAS drives offer dual-port redundancy, higher queue depths and better error recovery, which is why they dominate server and SAN deployments. SATA drives cost less and are entirely adequate for single-path nearline and backup roles. Fibre Channel drives remain in demand for legacy SAN arrays where replacement parts are no longer manufactured.
