Where Hitachi Drives Came From
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies was formed in 2003, when Hitachi combined its own disk business with the hard drive division it had bought from IBM. Many drives from that period carry the Hitachi name on the label even though the same product lines later shipped as HGST and then under Western Digital. That is why a Hitachi part number such as 0B22137 or HUS724020ALE640 is still the reference a controller or an asset register expects, and why we list these drives separately from our HGST Ultrastar range.
Ultrastar and Travelstar in This Range
Ultrastar is the data centre family. Here it covers a 300GB 15K SAS drive in the 3.5-inch form factor for older transactional arrays, and a 2TB 7200 RPM SATA nearline drive for capacity roles such as backup and file storage. Travelstar is the 2.5-inch mobile line, and the 80GB 5400 RPM SATA unit suits legacy laptops, embedded systems and industrial appliances where a like for like replacement avoids reimaging or requalifying the device.
