Dell PowerEdge servers are identified by generation - R730, R740, R750 and so on - and drive carriers changed between generations. A drive supplied in a 13G carrier will not seat in a 14G chassis even when the disk itself is identical, which is the most common ordering error on Dell hardware. Dell part numbers identify the drive, carrier and firmware combination together.
PERC Controllers and Firmware Validation
Dell PERC RAID controllers validate drive firmware and will flag non-Dell disks as unsupported, which can block a rebuild at exactly the wrong moment.
