Why Fibre Channel Drives Are Still Needed
Fibre Channel was the standard interface for enterprise disk arrays through the 2000s, and the drives connected directly to an FC loop inside the shelf. Newer arrays moved to SAS back ends, but many FC shelves are still running dependable workloads, and replacing a whole array to fix a single failed disk rarely makes financial sense. Manufacturers stopped producing these drives years ago, so tested spares are the practical way to keep those systems protected.
The Drives in This Range
There are two Seagate Cheetah 300GB 15K RPM drives at 4Gb FC, the ST3300955FC and the 9N7007-024, both in the 3.5-inch form factor. The first is the Seagate model number, and the second is a configuration code tied to a particular firmware build used by some OEM arrays. The third is the NetApp X287A-R5, also 300GB 15K at 4Gb, but formatted and coded specifically for NetApp shelves. They look alike on paper and they are not interchangeable.
Matching an FC Replacement
Copy the part number and firmware revision from the drive label or the array management interface, and note the shelf model. Array controllers are strict about coding, so we confirm the match before dispatch.
