How Thermal Receipt Printing Works
A thermal receipt printer heats selected dots on chemically coated paper, which darkens where it is heated. There is no ink, toner or ribbon, so the only consumable is paper, and the mechanism has very few moving parts. That is why thermal printers dominate retail and hospitality checkouts: they print a full receipt in about a second, run quietly and rarely need maintenance beyond clearing the occasional paper jam.
The Three Countertop Models
The Epson TM-T88VII is the latest generation of a series that has been a checkout standard for decades, and is supported by a very wide range of POS software. The Epson TM-m30III is a more compact model with a design that works on customer facing counters as well as behind them. The Star Micronics TSP143IV is a popular choice for tablet and cloud based POS systems. All three use 3-inch paper and print at 180 or 203 dpi, which is plenty for text, logos and barcodes on receipts.
