Rack, Tower and Blade Form Factors
Rack servers are the default for any organisation with a proper cabinet and structured cooling, and 1U and 2U models cover the majority of workloads. Tower servers suit small offices and branch sites without a rack, running quietly on standard power. Blade and multi-node systems maximise compute density per rack unit but require their own chassis and are only economical at scale. The right choice is usually dictated by your facility rather than by the workload.
Specifying a Server Correctly
Match the generation to the workload rather than buying the newest available. Virtualisation hosts need core count and memory capacity above all; database servers benefit more from clock speed and fast storage; file and backup servers need drive bays and network throughput. Drive bay configuration in particular cannot be changed later - a chassis built for eight large-form-factor bays will never accept twenty-four small-form-factor drives.
