Why Servers Use SAS
SAS drives connect over a full duplex interface with support for dual ports, which lets two controllers or two expander paths reach the same disk. Storage arrays rely on that for redundancy, and it is the main reason SAS remains the default in enterprise enclosures. SAS drives also offer deeper command queues and more predictable error handling under load than SATA, which matters when dozens of drives share a controller.
Speed Classes and Generations in This Range
The range includes 15K RPM drives such as the Lenovo 00MM685 and HGST 0B33079 for the lowest mechanical latency, 10K drives such as the IBM 90Y8782 and Seagate ST1200MM0198 for a balance of speed and capacity, and nearline SAS drives up to the 12TB Seagate Exos ST12000NM001G. Interface speeds span 3Gb/s, 6Gb/s and 12Gb/s. SAS is backward compatible, so a 12Gb/s drive runs on a 6Gb/s controller at the lower speed, but carrier style and OEM firmware still have to match the chassis.
SAS Versus SATA on the Same Controller
