What Nearline Actually Means
Nearline describes storage that is always online but not accessed as intensively as a transactional database. The drives spin at 7200 RPM, trade access latency for capacity, and are built with vibration tolerance and workload ratings suited to running 24 hours a day inside a multi drive chassis. That makes them the correct choice for backup repositories, video surveillance, document archives, object storage and general file shares, and a poor choice for virtual machine datastores with heavy random I/O.
Capacity Range and Interface Options
This range runs from 750GB and 1TB drives for older servers up to 6TB, 8TB, 12TB and 14TB models for new capacity. Nearline SATA drives such as the Seagate Exos ST8000NM0175 and WD Ultrastar 0F38785 are the lowest cost per terabyte. Nearline SAS and NL-SAS drives such as the Seagate Exos ST12000NM001G and IBM 00NA492 put the same 7200 RPM mechanism behind a SAS interface, adding dual port support and better behaviour on SAS controllers and expanders.
Sizing a Nearline Array
