Seagate Exos, Cheetah and Constellation Explained
Exos is Seagate's current enterprise and nearline family, covering 7200 RPM high-capacity drives from 1TB up to the largest capacities available, built for backup targets, archives and bulk storage. Cheetah is the legacy 15K RPM enterprise line still widely needed as spares for older SAN and server platforms. Constellation drives sit in the nearline space between them. Knowing which family your system expects saves ordering a drive that is mechanically compatible but wrong for the workload.
Matching Seagate Part Numbers
Seagate part numbers such as ST12000NM001G, ST1200MM0198 and 9ZM173-579 encode capacity, interface, form factor and firmware revision. RAID controllers in HPE, Dell and IBM systems often expect specific firmware, so we list drives by exact part number rather than by capacity alone.
