RAID 5 with 12TB members is widely considered inadvisable for exactly this reason; RAID 6 or equivalent double-parity schemes, which survive a second failure during rebuild, are the sensible choice at this capacity.
It also raises the value of a spare on the shelf. A rebuild cannot start until a replacement drive is present, and every hour spent waiting for delivery is an hour the array spends exposed.

Why SAS on a nearline drive
Nearline drives are available in both SAS and SATA, and at small capacities the choice is often driven by cost alone. At 12TB the argument for SAS strengthens considerably.
Dual-port connectivity. SAS drives present two independent paths, so a single cable, expander or controller failure does not isolate the drive. In a shared storage array or a system with redundant controllers, this is the difference between a component failure and an outage.
Deeper command queuing. SAS handles far more concurrent outstanding commands than SATA. During a rebuild, when the array is reading every drive at once while still serving production traffic, that queue depth is what keeps the system responsive.
Better error reporting. SAS provides richer error and health telemetry, which matters more as drives get larger because the window between a predictive warning and an actual failure is when you replace the drive without incident.
For a single-path backup target where none of these apply, SATA at the same capacity is a legitimate saving. For anything behind a redundant controller pair, SAS is the correct specification.

The workload characteristic that matters is sequential access. Nearline drives at this capacity perform close to their rating on large sequential reads and writes; heavy random I/O is where the 7200 RPM spindle speed becomes the constraint and a performance drive or flash tier is the right answer instead.
