The ST4000VN000 is a Seagate 4TB drive from the NAS line. NAS drives sit between desktop and enterprise, and that middle position is genuinely useful once you know what it does and does not include.

Reading the part number

ST identifies Seagate and the digits encode the capacity. The letters that follow identify the product family, and VN indicates the NAS line.

That letter code is the important part. Seagate uses different codes for desktop, NAS, surveillance and enterprise nearline drives, and they are genuinely different products despite identical physical dimensions and similar capacities. A drive is not defined by its size.

What a NAS drive adds over a desktop drive

Three things, and the third is the one that matters most.

Continuous duty rating. Built to run all day rather than for part of it, which is what a NAS does.

Vibration tolerance. A multi-bay enclosure generates vibration from its other drives, and the heads must stay on track despite it. Desktop drives lack this compensation and degrade in a populated enclosure.

Limited error recovery timing. This is the critical one. When a drive hits a bad sector, a desktop drive may retry for a long period β€” and a RAID controller waiting on it concludes the drive has failed and drops it from the array. A healthy drive ejected because it answered too slowly. NAS drives limit recovery time so the controller handles the error properly.

That third point is why desktop drives cause intermittent, unexplained array failures, and it is the single strongest argument for buying the right drive class rather than the cheapest drive of the right size.

What it does not have

Being straightforward, because this is where the tier boundary sits.

Compared with an enterprise nearline drive, a NAS drive typically carries a lower annual workload rating and a lower supported bay count.

That bay count figure is worth checking rather than skimming. NAS drives are rated for enclosures up to a certain number of bays, because vibration rises with drive count. Putting NAS drives in a densely populated server chassis exceeds what they were built for, even though they physically fit and initially work.

So the honest tiering:

Desktop β€” single drive, intermittent use, no array.

NAS β€” small multi-bay enclosures, continuous duty, moderate workload.

Where a NAS drive is the right buy

Four practical points.

Match drives within a group. A group is sized to its smallest member and runs at its slowest.

And the point worth repeating: RAID is not backup. A NAS with redundancy protects against a drive failing, not against deletion, corruption or the enclosure itself failing.

Before you order

Your enclosure model and how many bays it has β€” and whether that count is within the drive's rated support. What is currently fitted, if you are adding to an array. Your expected annual write volume, roughly. And whether the workload is sequential, because if it is transactional this is the wrong drive class entirely.

Common questions

Why not use a cheaper desktop drive in my NAS?
