Two to three hours of battery runtime sounds like a weakness until you look at how mobile receipt printers are actually used. Most are not printing continuously for eight hours. They come out for a burst of transactions, go back in a cradle, come out again.
The Star Micronics SM-S230i is specified around that pattern: 0.55 lbs with battery, 58 mm receipts at 203 dpi, MFi-certified Bluetooth for direct iPhone and iPad pairing, and both StarPRNT and ESC/POS emulation so it works with almost any POS.
MFi certification, and what happens without it
MFi is Apple's licensing programme for accessories that connect directly to iOS devices. A printer with it pairs natively with an iPhone or iPad and appears properly to the POS app. A printer without it either does not connect at all or works through a workaround that breaks at the next iOS update.
Given how much hospitality, mobile retail and field service runs on iPads, this is a specification worth checking before ordering rather than after. It is also one of the few things on a mobile printer spec sheet that cannot be worked around later.
Android and Windows are supported alongside iOS, so a mixed-device operation is not a problem.

Planning around a 2-3 hour battery
This is the specification to be honest about, because it determines whether a deployment works or frustrates everyone involved.
Where it is fine. Restaurant table service, where the printer is carried for a service period and cradled between them. Queue-busting during a lunch rush or a weekend peak. Market stalls with a power source nearby. Field service visits between which the engineer returns to a vehicle with a charger.
Where it is not. An eight-hour delivery round with no vehicle charger. A full-day event with no power access. Any operation where the printer is carried continuously from open to close.
The fix in most cases is charging infrastructure rather than a different printer. A vehicle charger, a cradle at each service station, or a spare battery per unit turns a 2-3 hour runtime into all-day coverage. Budget for that alongside the devices rather than discovering the gap in week one.
If genuinely continuous all-day printing with no charging opportunity is the requirement, a printer rated for longer runtime such as the Epson TM-P20II is a better fit.

StarPRNT is Star's own language and gives the fullest control over the printer's features. ESC/POS emulation makes it look like an Epson-standard printer to any POS expecting one.
Practically, this means integration is rarely the obstacle. A POS system already driving receipt printers will drive this one, and a developer building something custom has StarPRNT available for finer control.
The 32KB receive buffer is worth a mention. Where an operator processes several transactions in quick succession - a queue being cleared, a table of separate bills - the buffer holds queued output so the POS app is released to take the next payment rather than waiting on the printer.
Realistic use cases
Restaurant and bar table service, pay-at-table hospitality, retail queue-busting at peak, salon and clinic point-of-service payment, market and pop-up trading, and field service invoicing with a vehicle charger.
The condition that justifies any mobile printer is that the transaction happens away from a counter. Where every payment is taken at a fixed till, a counter printer such as the TSP143IV-UE is faster, cheaper and has no battery to manage.
Note also that 58 mm receipt stock is not label media, and direct thermal output fades over months. For labelling on the move, a mobile label printer is the correct device.
Before ordering a fleet
Check your receipt template against 58 mm. A layout designed for an 80 mm counter printer will not simply shrink - line lengths, column alignment and logo sizing all need rework, and doing that before devices arrive is far easier than after.
Budget carrying accessories with the devices. A belt clip or shoulder strap for on-foot use, a mount and charger for vehicles. Printers carried loose get dropped more often than any rating anticipates.
Standardise the thermal paper. Cheap rolls print faintly and wear the head faster, and faint print is the usual reason receipt QR codes fail to scan.
