Understanding Server Part Numbers: Option, Spare and Model

Most wrong-part orders come from ordering against a specification rather than a part number. A 600GB 10K SAS drive is a description that matches dozens of parts, several of which will not work in your server.

One drive can carry several numbers

This is the source of most confusion, and it is worth understanding before ordering anything.

A single physical drive frequently has three or four different numbers printed on it or associated with it.

The manufacturer’s own model number — the Seagate, Western Digital, HGST or Toshiba identifier for the bare drive.

The server vendor’s option or kit number — what HP, Dell, IBM or Lenovo sold it as, usually covering the drive plus its carrier as an orderable product.

The vendor’s spare or assembly number — what service used to replace a failed unit, frequently different from the option number for the same thing.

A firmware-specific or revision number in some cases.

The practical consequence: a seller listing "the same drive" may be quoting a different one of these numbers, and matching on capacity and interface does not tell you whether it fits your carrier or whether your controller will accept it.

Option numbers versus spare numbers

The distinction that catches people most often on HP and Dell equipment.

An option number is what you would have ordered when buying the server — the sales product, typically including the carrier.

A spare number is what a service engineer would have fitted — the replacement part, which may or may not include a carrier, and which sometimes covers a slightly different revision.

Neither is more correct. What matters is knowing which one you are quoting and which one you need. Asking a seller "is this the option or the spare number" is a reasonable question and a good filter.

The carrier is part of the part

Why capacity and interface are not enough.

Server drives arrive in a carrier — the tray that slides into the bay. Carriers are specific to the chassis generation, and they change between generations even from the same vendor.

Three things follow.

A drive with the right specification and the wrong carrier will not fit. This is the single most common wrong-part situation.

Carrier generation is frequently encoded in the vendor part number rather than stated in the description, which is why the number matters more than the specification.

If you are unsure, the reliable move is to pull a working drive and read the label on the carrier as well as the drive.

Firmware coding

The less visible constraint.

Some vendors ship drives with firmware built for their controllers. A drive with identical mechanics and a different firmware load may be reported as unsupported, may not be usable in an array, or may produce warnings.

Storage arrays are stricter than servers here. A drive that works in a ProLiant may be rejected by an MSA, and array drives frequently carry different part numbers from server drives of the same capacity. Our architecture guide covers the distinction.

NetApp equipment adds another: drives are frequently formatted to a non-standard sector size, so a drive that is physically and electrically correct may still be unusable without reformatting.

How to identify what you actually have

Three methods, in order of reliability.

Read the label on a fitted drive. Pull one from a healthy array — on a running system with redundancy, briefly, or during a maintenance window — and photograph the label. It carries the vendor part number, the manufacturer model, capacity, interface and frequently the firmware revision. This is the most reliable single action you can take.

Query the system. The management controller or storage controller reports what is fitted, including model and firmware. That reads what the drive says about itself, which is useful when you cannot physically access the machine. Our management guide covers accessing it.

Check the original documentation — the configuration as delivered, if you have it. Least reliable, because drives get replaced over the years and the documentation rarely follows.

What to send when asking for a quote

Five things, and the first two do most of the work.

The part number from a fitted drive, or a photograph of the label.

The server or array model and generation.

How many bays and what type — 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch, hot-swap or simple-swap.

What controller is fitted, since that decides what is accepted.

Whether you need the carrier, or already have empty carriers or caddies.

Common questions

Why does one drive have several part numbers?

Because the manufacturer, the server vendor’s sales option and the vendor’s service spare are all different identifiers for the same physical item. A seller quoting "the same drive" may be using a different one of these.
