NetApp storage is the one platform where buying a drive on capacity and interface is guaranteed to fail. A disk that is mechanically identical to the one you need, from the same manufacturer, in the same form factor, will be rejected by the shelf.
The NetApp X287A-R5 is a 300GB Fibre Channel 4Gb 15K 3.5-inch drive carrying NetApp firmware and NetApp formatting. Both are why it works where a generic equivalent does not.
The sector size problem
Standard enterprise drives format at 512 or 520 bytes per sector. NetApp formats its drives differently, using additional bytes per sector to store checksum data that the storage operating system relies on for block-level integrity checking.
That is not a firmware flag that can be toggled. It is how the drive is low-level formatted, and it means a standard disk presents the wrong geometry to a NetApp controller. The shelf will either not recognise the disk at all or will refuse to assign it to an aggregate.
People occasionally attempt to reformat a generic drive to NetApp specification. It requires tooling most sites do not have, the results are inconsistent, and a disk that formats successfully may still be rejected on firmware. For any production filer, buying NetApp-coded disks is the only reliable route.
This is genuinely different from other vendors. An HPE or Dell drive is a standard disk with vendor firmware, and a generic disk will often work with cosmetic warnings. A NetApp disk is formatted differently at a level that cannot be worked around.

Fibre Channel shelves and why they are still running
Fibre Channel disk shelves are legacy technology. NetApp moved to SAS years ago, and nobody is building new FC storage. Yet a substantial number of FC shelves remain in production, for reasons that are entirely rational.
The systems work. They hold data that has not needed to move. Migrating a filer is a project with risk and cost attached, and where the storage is serving archive, secondary or departmental workloads adequately, deferring that project is a reasonable decision year after year.
The consequence is a parts problem. NetApp stopped supplying FC disks long ago, lead times on the secondary market can be long, and a shelf with a failed disk and no spare is a genuine operational risk rather than an inconvenience.
For any FC shelf still in service, holding spares is not optional. The drives are finite in supply and the population only decreases.

A 15,000 RPM spindle was, for years, the fastest mechanical storage available. Capacity was small because platter density at that rotational speed was limited, and heat and power draw were both high.
The point was latency. A 15K drive seeks noticeably faster than a 10K one and dramatically faster than a 7200 RPM nearline drive, which is what transactional workloads needed before flash became affordable. Databases, mail stores and virtualisation datastores were all built on 15K arrays with high spindle counts.
In a NetApp FC shelf, these drives are usually serving exactly that kind of workload, and replacing a failed 15K disk with anything slower is not an option - the aggregate expects uniform drive characteristics, and mixed spindle speeds within a RAID group degrade the whole group to the slowest member.

First, count your exposure. Work out how many disks of each part number are in service, and how many spares you hold. A shelf running with zero spares of a discontinued part is carrying more risk than most IT plans acknowledge.
Second, decide the migration horizon deliberately rather than by default. Parts availability sets a practical end date on any FC platform, and it is better to plan a migration while spares are still obtainable than to be forced into one by a failure you cannot fix.
