InfiniBand vs High-Speed Ethernet
Mellanox is the reference platform for both. InfiniBand delivers the lowest achievable latency and native RDMA, which is why it dominates HPC clusters and large-scale AI training fabrics. High-speed Ethernet with RoCE offers most of the throughput benefit while staying on standard Ethernet infrastructure, which is usually the easier path for enterprise data centres. ConnectX adapters support both, so the fabric decision can be made at the switch layer.

At 25G, 100G and above, the cable and transceiver choice matters as much as the adapter. Direct-attach copper is cost-effective in-rack, while active optical cables cover longer runs.
