NetApp Drives Are Not Standard Server Disks
This is the single most important thing to know when sourcing NetApp storage. NetApp drives carry NetApp-specific firmware and are formatted to non-standard sector sizes, so a mechanically identical disk from a server vendor will not be accepted by a FAS controller or disk shelf. Part numbers such as X287A-R5 identify the exact drive, firmware and shelf compatibility required.
Spares for Legacy FAS and Fibre Channel Shelves
Many NetApp FAS systems and Fibre Channel disk shelves remain in service well past the point where NetApp supplies replacement drives. Refurbished NetApp-coded disks are usually the only viable source of spares for these platforms, and keeping a spare on the shelf is standard practice given the lead times involved.
