512n vs 512e vs 4Kn: Drive Sector Format Compatibility
Sector format is the specification that stops a drive working in a system that otherwise accepts it, and it is rarely shown prominently in a listing. This covers what 512n, 512e and 4Kn mean and where each one fails.
What is the difference between 512n, 512e and 4Kn?
Three ways a drive presents its sectors to the system.
512n (512 native) uses 512-byte sectors physically and logically. This is the legacy format every operating system understands.
512e (512 emulation) uses 4096-byte physical sectors but presents 512-byte logical sectors to the system. The drive translates internally. This is the most common format on modern high-capacity drives.
4Kn (4K native) uses 4096-byte sectors physically and logically. Nothing is translated, which is more efficient, but the system must understand 4K sectors natively.
The practical consequence: 512e works almost everywhere; 4Kn does not. And mixing formats in one array causes problems of its own.
Does VMware support 4Kn drives?
The question people ask most, so being careful with it.
Support for 512e and 4Kn arrived in different hypervisor versions and differs between local storage, RDM and certain features. Older hypervisor versions do not support 4Kn local drives at all, and some current configurations still have restrictions. The safe position for a mixed or older estate is 512e. It is the format most likely to work without investigation. Choose 4Kn only where you have confirmed support end to end.
Which operating systems support 4Kn drives?
Broadly, current Windows Server and current Linux distributions handle 4Kn for data volumes. Boot from 4Kn typically requires UEFI rather than legacy BIOS boot. Older operating systems may not support 4Kn at all.
Two things that catch people.
The controller matters as much as the OS. A RAID controller must support 4Kn drives independently of the operating system. Older controllers do not. Our controller guide covers identifying what yours supports.

Can you mix 512e and 4Kn drives in a RAID array?
Do not.
A RAID group should use one sector format throughout. Mixing 512n, 512e and 4Kn drives in a single array is either refused by the controller or produces a group that behaves unpredictably.

The rule: match the sector format of the drives already in the group. Check the label on an existing drive or query the controller before ordering.
How do I check a drive's sector format?
Four ways.
The drive label frequently shows it β look for 512e, 4Kn or 512n printed near the part number. Our part numbers guide covers reading the label.
The part number suffix. Many manufacturers encode sector format in the part number, though the convention varies by vendor.
The controller or management interface, which reports logical and physical sector size per drive.
The operating system, using standard disk utilities that report logical and physical block sizes.
When ordering a replacement, state the sector format explicitly. It is the specification most often left off a quote and most often the reason a drive comes back.
Which sector format should I buy?
Three rules that cover most situations.
Replacing a drive in an existing array: match what is there. No exceptions.
Building new on a current platform with confirmed support: 4Kn is fine and slightly more efficient, but only where support is confirmed at OS, hypervisor and controller level.
Anything uncertain, mixed or older: 512e. It is the format that works without a research project.
And note that high-capacity drives are frequently 512e or 4Kn only β 512n is disappearing at the top of the capacity range.
