What is the HPE 872475-B21 drive?

A 900GB 15,000 RPM enterprise SAS hard drive in 2.5 inch small form factor, supplied in an HPE Smart Carrier for ProLiant servers.

Which HPE servers is 872475-B21 compatible with?

The question that decides whether it fits, and the answer is about the carrier rather than the drive.

The Smart Carrier generation must match your chassis generation. A drive with the correct capacity, speed and interface will not seat if the tray is from a different generation β€” and the carrier generation is encoded in the part number rather than stated in most descriptions.

Is 15K SAS still worth buying in 2026?

An honest answer, because an SSD outperforms any 15K mechanical drive comfortably.

15K drives remain the right choice in specific situations rather than as a general one.

Do I need HPE-coded drives, or will any 900GB SAS drive work?

It depends on the controller.

HPE Smart Array controllers validate drive firmware. A non-HPE drive may work, may be flagged as unsupported in iLO, may not report predictive failure warnings, or may be refused during an array rebuild β€” which is the worst moment to discover it.

Also note that MSA array drives are separate parts from ProLiant server drives. An MSA controller expects array-specific firmware and will report a standard server drive as unsupported, even at identical capacity.

Do I need drive caddies as well?

If you are expanding rather than replacing, almost certainly yes.

Empty bays rarely come with carriers. A server with four drives in an eight-bay chassis has four carriers. Adding drives means adding carriers, and they must match your Smart Carrier generation.

How many 15K drives should I buy for a performance tier?

A sizing principle worth knowing.

In a performance tier, spindle count matters more than capacity per drive. Six 900GB drives serve more requests per second than two 2.4TB drives of the same class, because there are more heads working.

Two other points at this drive class. 15K drives run hotter and draw more power, which contributes to thermal load in a fully populated chassis. And they are audibly louder, which matters if the machine sits near people.
