Fibre Channel disk shelves are not something anyone builds today. Yet a substantial number are still running in production, holding data that has not needed to move, in organisations for whom a storage migration is a project with cost and risk attached.
The Seagate Cheetah 9N7007-024 is a 300GB Fibre Channel 4Gb 15K 3.5-inch drive for exactly those systems. It is a legacy part, and that is the whole point of it.
Cheetah: what the family name tells you
Seagate’s enterprise families have changed over the years and the names carry real meaning.
Cheetah was the 15,000 RPM performance line — the fastest mechanical storage available for well over a decade, and the standard for transactional workloads before flash became affordable. Capacities were small because platter density at that spindle speed was limited, and heat and power draw were both high. None of that mattered against the latency advantage.
Constellation was the nearline capacity line that followed, and Exos is the current enterprise and nearline family.
If a system was specified around Cheetah drives, it was specified around 15K latency. Replacing a failed one with a slower drive is not a like-for-like swap, and in an array it degrades the whole RAID group to the slowest member.

Fibre Channel is an interface, not a protocol detail
FC drives are not SAS drives with a different connector. The interface is electrically and logically distinct, using an arbitrated loop or fabric topology rather than the point-to-point connections SAS uses.
Practically that means three things. FC drives only work in FC shelves — there is no adapter, no bridging, no compatibility with a SAS backplane. The 4Gb figure is the loop speed, and shelves specified at 2Gb or 4Gb are not always interchangeable. And the drives carry their own physical connector format that will not seat anywhere else.
None of this is a problem if you are replacing a failed drive in an existing shelf, which is what these drives are almost exclusively bought for. It matters enormously if someone is trying to source parts by capacity and speed without checking the interface.

Seagate stopped manufacturing Fibre Channel drives long ago. Every unit still in circulation came out of a system somewhere, and the available population only decreases. That has two consequences worth planning around.
Count your exposure. Work out how many drives of this part number are in service across your shelves, and how many spares you hold. A production array running with zero spares of a discontinued part carries far more risk than most IT plans acknowledge, because the recovery path depends on market availability rather than on a supplier commitment.
Set a migration horizon deliberately. Parts availability puts a practical end date on any FC platform. Planning a migration while spares are still obtainable is a considerably better position than being forced into one by a failure you cannot fix. That does not mean migrating now — it means knowing roughly when, rather than discovering it.
In the meantime, holding one or two spares per shelf is cheap insurance against a very expensive scenario.
FC drives and shelf coding
One further point that catches people. Some storage vendors ship Fibre Channel drives with vendor-specific firmware or formatting, and those drives are not interchangeable with generic Seagate FC units even at identical capacity and speed.
NetApp is the clearest example: its disks are formatted with non-standard sector sizes, so a standard FC drive is rejected outright. If your shelf is NetApp, you need NetApp-coded drives rather than these.

Common questions
Can a Fibre Channel drive be used in a SAS backplane?
No. Fibre Channel is electrically and logically distinct from SAS, using a loop or fabric topology rather than point-to-point connections, and the physical connector will not seat in a SAS backplane. There is no adapter or bridging option.
Will this drive work in a NetApp shelf?
No. NetApp formats its disks with non-standard sector sizes carrying checksum data the storage OS relies on, so a standard Seagate FC drive is rejected outright. NetApp shelves need NetApp-coded drives.
Can I replace a failed 15K drive with a 10K one?
Not sensibly. A system specified around Cheetah drives was specified around 15K latency, and in a RAID group mixed spindle speeds degrade the whole group to the slowest member. Replace like for like.
