The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U dual-socket rack server and one of the most common machines on the secondary market. The model name covers several genuinely different configurations, so this covers what to establish before buying.

What is the Dell PowerEdge R730?

A 2U rack server using socket LGA 2011-3, supporting Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors, with DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots and iDRAC8 remote management.

It is a general-purpose machine that served as a virtualisation host, database server and file server across a very wide range of organisations, which is why used units are plentiful and parts are widely available.

PowerEdge R730 drive bay options

The specification that matters most, and the one the model name does not tell you.

The R730 shipped with different front configurations including 8 large form factor bays, 16 small form factor bays, and a higher-density small form factor version commonly listed as the R730xd for the larger builds.

Three things follow.

Bay count and size are set by the backplane, not by the model. You cannot add bays to a chassis that does not have them β€” it needs different backplane hardware and cabling, which is chassis-specific. Our backplanes guide covers this.

2.5 inch and 3.5 inch chassis are different machines. Neither converts to the other.

Empty bays need carriers, and PowerEdge carriers are generation-specific. A machine with six drives in a sixteen-bay chassis has six carriers.

Ask for a photograph of the front of the chassis. It answers most of this in one step.

What processors does the R730 support?

Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and v4, both on LGA 2011-3.

The same trap applies here as on other platforms of this generation: v4 support requires an adequate firmware level. A v4 processor fits a board shipped for v3 and the machine will not post without support for it. R730 memory configuration rules

Three rules.

A single-processor R730 can only use twelve slots. The other twelve belong to the second socket and are inactive without it.

Populate channels evenly. Uneven population reports the full capacity while delivering less bandwidth, and nothing flags it β€” our DDR4 RDIMM guide covers the population rules.

Speed can drop as slots fill, so a fully populated machine may run its memory slower than a half-populated one.

Desktop memory does not work in this platform β€” it requires registered ECC modules.

Which RAID controller comes in the R730?

Commonly a PERC H730 or H730P, and the cache battery is what to check on any used unit.

What is usually missing from a used R730?

Ask about these specifically before ordering.

Rails β€” they stay in the rack when the server comes out, and they are chassis-specific.

Drive carriers for any empty bays, matched to the correct generation.

Risers, without which no expansion cards can be fitted at all.

The PERC cache battery, which is a consumable with a limited life.

Bezel and blanks for empty bays and fan positions, which matter for airflow.

Is the PowerEdge R730 still a good buy?

Straightforwardly.

In its favour: parts are plentiful and cheap because the platform was so widely deployed, it is well documented, and most administrators have seen one. For labs, test environments, file and backup servers, and fleet matching, it remains sensible.

Do used R730 servers include rails and drive caddies?

Often not. Rails stay in the rack when the server comes out and empty bays rarely come with carriers. Risers and the PERC cache battery are also commonly absent, so ask about each specifically.

Can I use non-Dell drives in an R730?

PERC controllers validate drive firmware, so a non-coded drive may be flagged in iDRAC, may not report predictive failure warnings, or may be refused during a rebuild. Behind a pass-through configuration the constraint largely disappears.
