The HDD2K11-F is a Toshiba 1TB 2.5 inch hard drive. Laptop drives have a fit constraint that server drives do not, and it stops more orders than any specification does.

Where a mechanical laptop drive still makes sense

An honest answer, because for most machines an SSD is the better purchase.

So the honest framing: buy mechanical for capacity, buy flash for responsiveness. If the machine feels slow, flash is the answer. If you need volume at low cost, mechanical is the answer.

Laptop drives are not enterprise drives

Worth stating clearly, since 2.5 inch drives appear in both worlds.

A drive built for laptops is designed for intermittent use in a portable machine β€” light duty cycle, shock tolerance for being carried, low power draw.

An enterprise 2.5 inch drive is built for continuous operation in a server, with a duty cycle rating, vibration tolerance for a chassis full of other spinning drives, and firmware that handles errors in a way RAID controllers expect.

The reverse also holds, though less harmfully: an enterprise drive in a laptop works but draws more power and runs louder for no benefit.

Before you swap a drive

Three practical points.

Plan the data. Whether you are cloning the existing drive or reinstalling, decide before you start. A drive swap without a plan for the data is where the pain is.

Keep the old drive until the new one is proven. It is the fastest rollback available, and it costs nothing to leave it on a shelf for a few weeks.
