HP Serial Number Lookup: Where to Find It and What It Tells You
Finding the serial number on HP and HPE equipment is the first step in almost every support, warranty or parts question, and where it lives differs by product line. This covers finding it and what it tells you.
Where is the serial number on HPE servers?
Four places, in order of convenience.
The management controller. iLO reports serial number and product number without anyone visiting the machine. This is the fastest route and the one people forget. Our management guide covers access.
The pull-out tab on the front of most ProLiant rack servers. A small card slides out from the front panel carrying the serial and product number.
A label on the chassis, usually on the top surface or the rear.
The operating system, using standard system information tools that read it from the hardware.
On towers and workstations the label is typically on the rear or base. On switches and network equipment it is usually on the underside or rear panel.
Serial number vs product number
HP and HPE use both, and they answer different questions.
The serial number identifies your specific unit. It is what warranty and entitlement lookups need.
The product number identifies the model and configuration as ordered. It is what compatibility questions need β which parts fit, which options were available.
When asking a supplier about parts, give both. The serial confirms what you actually have; the product number confirms what fits. Our part numbers guide covers the wider numbering system.
What a serial number lookup tells you
Four things, subject to what the vendor exposes.
Warranty or support status and its end date.
The support level β response time, coverage hours, on-site or return-to-base. These differ enormously and our support guide covers what varies.
The original configuration as shipped, which is genuinely useful on inherited equipment. It tells you what the machine had before anyone changed it.
Applicable firmware and updates, since access to those is frequently tied to entitlement rather than ownership.
Our entitlement guide covers using this to plan rather than react.
Buying used: what the serial tells you
Four checks before purchase rather than after.
Does any coverage remain? Sometimes it does, and it has value.
Does coverage transfer? This varies by vendor and is not automatic.
Will the vendor establish new coverage? Some will, sometimes after inspection and firmware update. Others will not support equipment they did not sell you.
Is it registered to someone else? Equipment still showing a previous owner complicates a support case, and it is worth resolving at purchase.
A seller who can answer these is telling you something useful about provenance. Our grading guide covers the wider set of questions.
Record it before you need it
Three habits.
Record serial, product number and coverage end date at commissioning, while the information is in front of you. Our acceptance testing guide covers the checklist.
Store it where it survives the equipment being down. Details on a wiki hosted on the failed server are unavailable exactly when needed.
Review coverage end dates annually. Coverage that lapsed unnoticed is the most common support failure there is.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the serial number on an HPE ProLiant server?
Four places: iLO reports it remotely, a pull-out tab on the front panel carries it, a label sits on the chassis top or rear, and the operating system can read it from the hardware. iLO is the fastest and the one people forget.
What is the difference between serial number and product number?
The serial identifies your specific unit and is what entitlement lookups need. The product number identifies the model and configuration as ordered and is what compatibility questions need. Give both when asking about parts.
Can I find the serial number without opening the server?
Yes. iLO reports it over the network, the front pull-out tab carries it without tools, and operating system utilities read it from the hardware. No need to open anything.
What does a serial number lookup show?
Warranty status and end date, the support level, the original configuration as shipped, and which firmware you are entitled to. The original configuration is particularly useful on inherited equipment.
Does warranty transfer when I buy a used HPE server?
Not automatically. It varies by vendor and remaining coverage does not necessarily follow the equipment to a new owner. Check before buying, along with whether the vendor will establish new coverage at all.
The server is registered to a previous owner. Does it matter?
It can complicate a support case. Worth resolving at purchase rather than during an incident.
Send us the serial and product number from a machine and we will tell you honestly how available its parts are, whatever its coverage says.
