MZ-NLN256C Samsung PM871b 256GB SSD: Client, Not Enterprise
The MZ-NLN256C is a Samsung PM871b series solid state drive at 256GB. It belongs to a category worth understanding clearly, because the name on the drive does not tell you which market it was built for.
This is a client drive, not an enterprise one
The distinction that governs where it belongs.
Samsung's PM871 series is an OEM client drive β supplied to system builders to go into laptops and desktops rather than sold at retail, and designed for the workload a personal machine generates.
That is a different product from an enterprise SSD, in ways that are not visible from the specification.
Endurance is lower. Client drives are rated for the writing a personal machine does, which is far less than a server generates. Our endurance guide covers calculating whether a rating covers your workload.
No power loss protection. Enterprise SSDs include capacitors that let the drive complete writes in flight when power is lost. Client drives generally do not, which means an unexpected power loss can lose recently written data or, in the worst case, corrupt the drive's internal mapping.
Sustained write performance differs. Client drives are tuned for bursts β the pattern a person generates β and performance can fall considerably under sustained writing. A benchmark looks excellent; a long copy tells a different story.
Consistency is not a design goal. Enterprise drives aim for predictable latency; client drives aim for peak numbers.
Where it belongs
Three good uses.
Laptop and desktop upgrades. Its intended purpose, and replacing a mechanical drive with flash changes how a machine feels more than any other upgrade at this price β because everything a machine does while starting up and opening applications is random access, which mechanical drives are inherently poor at.
Fixed-function machines β kiosks, signage players, POS terminals, thin clients β where the workload is light and unchanging. Our POS peripherals guide covers that hardware picture.
Boot volumes in light-duty machines, where the drive is read frequently and written rarely.
At 256GB, treat the capacity honestly: it suits a system drive with applications, not a system drive holding a large data set as well. Machines with a second bay do well running flash for the system and mechanical storage for bulk data β our laptop drive guide covers that arrangement.
Where it does not belong
Being direct about this, because it is a common and costly mistake.
Not in a server. Not as a datastore, not in a RAID array, not as a cache tier. The endurance rating will be consumed far faster than expected, and the absence of power loss protection matters considerably more in a machine that is expected to survive a power event.
Not in a write-heavy role of any kind β database, logging target, video capture, caching layer.

Form factor and interface
Two checks before ordering, since Samsung's PM871 series was produced in more than one form.
M.2 or 2.5 inch. These are physically different and not interchangeable. Confirm which your machine takes.
For M.2, the interface. M.2 is a form factor rather than an interface β a module can be SATA or NVMe, and a slot wired for one may not accept the other even though the module physically fits. The PM871 series is a SATA family, which means it will not work in a slot wired only for NVMe.

Judging a used client SSD
One advantage flash has over mechanical drives when buying used.
SSD wear is measurable. The drive reports how much of its rated endurance has been consumed, which is a far better condition indicator than power-on hours. Ask for that figure β our drive health guide covers reading it, and our grading guide covers the questions worth asking a seller.
Note that a client drive's total rated endurance is modest to begin with, so a used one that has done real work may have consumed a meaningful proportion of it. The percentage matters more here than on an enterprise drive with generous headroom.
Before you order
The machine make and model. Whether it takes M.2 or 2.5 inch, and for M.2 the length and whether the slot is wired for SATA. Whether this is a system drive or bulk storage. And what the machine actually does β because if the answer involves a server or sustained writing, this is the wrong drive class.
Common questions
Can I use this SSD in a server?
You should not. It is an OEM client drive with lower endurance, no power loss protection, and error handling that can cause a RAID controller to drop it. A server will consume the endurance rating far faster than the drive was designed for.
What is power loss protection and why does it matter?
Capacitors that let a drive complete writes in flight when power is lost. Enterprise SSDs include them; client drives generally do not. Without it, an unexpected power loss can lose recently written data or corrupt the driveβs internal mapping.
Will an M.2 drive fit any M.2 slot?
No. M.2 is a form factor, not an interface β modules can be SATA or NVMe, and a slot wired for one may not accept the other even though the module fits. This is a SATA family, so it will not work in an NVMe-only slot. Length also has to match.
Why does it benchmark well but feel slow on long copies?
Client drives are tuned for bursts, which is the pattern a person generates. Sustained write performance can fall considerably once that burst capacity is used, so a benchmark looks excellent while a long copy tells a different story.
How do I check the condition of a used SSD?
Ask for the wear indicator, which reports how much rated endurance has been consumed β a far better measure than power-on hours. On a client drive the percentage matters more than on an enterprise drive, because the total rating is modest to begin with.
