Printer Media Handling: Tear-Off, Peel, Cutter and Rewind

Two printers with identical print specifications can suit completely different operations, because how the label leaves the printer decides how the operator uses it. This is chosen at purchase and is awkward to change afterwards.

Tear-off

The default, and correct more often than people assume.

Labels print and advance to a bar, and the operator tears them off manually. Simple, cheap, nothing extra to fail.

Suits: batch printing where several labels come off at once, low to moderate volumes, and operations where the operator is at the printer anyway.

Does not suit: applying labels one at a time to items passing a station, where tearing becomes the slow step.

Peel-off (dispense)

The label prints, the backing is peeled away, and the label is presented ready to take.

Crucially, the printer waits until the label is removed before printing the next one. That is what makes it suit one-at-a-time application β€” the operator takes a label, applies it, and the next appears.

Suits: applying labels individually to products, cartons or specimens as work moves through a station.

Two things to know. A peel mechanism needs somewhere for the backing liner to go, which is either a rewind spindle or a path that lets it fall away β€” and that liner has to be managed. And because printing pauses per label, throughput is set by the operator rather than the printer.

Rewind

Printed labels wind back onto a roll rather than being separated.

Suits: producing rolls of labels for later use elsewhere β€” feeding an applicator, sending to another site, or supplying a production line that applies them mechanically.

Two variants exist: winding the labels with their backing intact, or peeling and winding only the liner. Which you need depends on what happens to the roll afterwards, so state that when ordering.

Cutter

The label is cut from the web after printing.

Suits: continuous media without gaps, tags, wristbands, and anywhere a clean edge matters or the media is not pre-cut into labels.

Three things worth knowing before choosing it.

Cutters jam, and a jam stops production rather than slowing it. Where output is on a critical path, hold a spare cutter module if it is user-replaceable.

Applicator and print-and-apply

Where the label is applied mechanically rather than by hand.

A print engine feeds an applicator that places the label onto product passing a station β€” used in high-volume packing and production where manual application cannot keep up.

Two points worth stating plainly. This is an integration rather than a purchase: the print engine, the applicator and the line control have to work together, and the specification comes from whoever designs that system. And print engines differ from standard printers in mounting and interface, so they are not simply a printer in a frame.

If you are being asked to specify one, the useful question is what the applicator manufacturer supports rather than what printer you prefer.

Sensors: gap, black mark and continuous

Related, and a common source of feed problems.

The printer needs to know where one label ends and the next begins. It does this by detecting gaps between labels, black marks printed on the liner, or by treating the media as continuous and cutting or tearing at a set length.

Two consequences.

The sensor mode must match the media. A printer set for gap detection fed black-mark media will misfeed, and it looks like a media fault.

Calibration matters after a media change. Switching to a different label size or liner usually needs recalibration, and skipping it produces skipped or partial labels. Our maintenance guide covers this alongside cleaning.

Choosing

Four questions settle it.

Are labels applied one at a time as items pass, or printed in batches? One at a time argues for peel; batches argue for tear-off.

Is the media pre-cut into labels, or continuous? Continuous media needs a cutter.

Does anything downstream consume a roll? That means rewind.

Is application mechanical? That is a print-and-apply system rather than a printer choice.
