Receipt Paper Rolls: Sizes, Thermal vs Bond and BPA-Free
Receipt paper looks like a commodity and is not. The wrong roll jams, fades, or does not fit the printer at all. This covers the four measurements that matter and the coating question.
The four measurements on a receipt roll
Every roll is described by these, and all four have to fit your printer.
Width. The common sizes are 80mm (3 inch) and 58mm (2 inch). A narrower roll will physically fit a wider printer but prints off-centre and wastes the mechanism; a wider roll does not fit at all. Match the printer specification.
Diameter. How large the full roll is. The printer’s paper compartment has a maximum, and a roll above it will not close the lid. Larger diameter means fewer changes, so use the maximum your printer takes.
Core diameter. The hole in the middle. Printers with a spindle need a matching core; printers with a drop-in compartment are less fussy.
Length. Follows from diameter and paper thickness, and is what determines how often staff change rolls.
Thermal or impact: which paper does my printer need?
This is decided by the printer, not by preference.
Thermal printers need thermal paper, which is chemically coated and darkens under heat. There is no ink or ribbon. Thermal paper in an impact printer produces nothing.
Impact printers need bond paper and a ribbon cartridge. Bond paper in a thermal printer produces nothing at all.

How to tell thermal from bond paper
Scratch the surface with a fingernail or a coin. Thermal paper marks dark where you scratch; bond paper does not. That takes two seconds and settles the question.
Thermal paper is also coated on one side only. Loaded the wrong way round it produces blank receipts, which is the most common receipt printer complaint after running out of paper.
BPA and coating types
Thermal paper coatings have changed, and it matters for procurement in some sectors.
Traditional thermal coatings used BPA as a developer. BPA-free and phenol-free papers are now widely available and are required or preferred in some jurisdictions and sectors, particularly food handling and healthcare.
Where this applies to you, specify it explicitly when ordering, because standard stock is still sold alongside. The printer does not care; the compliance requirement does.
Why receipts fade, and what to do
Thermal receipts fade with heat, light, humidity and contact with certain plastics and oils. A receipt in a car windscreen or a wallet against a plastic card can be unreadable within weeks.
Three responses.
For records you must keep, do not rely on the thermal original. Scan or photograph it, or print on bond with an impact printer.
For customer receipts, this is normally acceptable and expected.
Store rolls properly — cool, dry, out of direct light, away from solvents. A roll stored badly prints poorly before it is even used. Our media guide covers storage for label stock, and the same principles apply.

Five things, and giving all five gets a usable quote first time.
Printer model, which settles most of the rest.
Width in mm or inches.
Diameter, or the printer’s maximum.
Thermal or bond.
BPA-free, if required.
And order enough. Receipt rolls are consumed faster than people plan for, and running out at a till is an immediate problem rather than an inconvenience.
