Most presentation scanners commit you to one way of working. They sit in the counter, items pass over them, and anything too large or awkward to lift becomes a problem the operator solves by dragging the item across the glass or typing the code by hand.

The Zebra DS9308 avoids that by being both things at once. It stands on the counter and reads hands-free, and it is light enough at 0.55 lbs to pick up and use as a handheld when the item will not come to it. One device, two modes, no switch to press.

Why dual-mode solves a real problem

Watch any counter for twenty minutes and you will see the exception cases. A bulky box. A crate of stock. A framed item. A customer's phone held at an awkward angle. A code on the underside of something heavy.

At 0.55 lbs the DS9308 sits between a dedicated countertop unit like the Honeywell Solaris 7190g at 1.4 lbs and a pure handheld like the Zebra DS2208 at 0.35 lbs. That is deliberate: heavy enough to stay put in the stand, light enough that staff actually lift it rather than working around it.

If your counter never sees awkward items, a dedicated presentation scanner will be steadier. If your operators are always moving, a pure handheld is lighter. The DS9308 is for counters that genuinely need both.

Phone screens and GS1 DataBar

Two capabilities matter commercially more than any speed figure.

The DS9308 reads codes displayed on a customer's phone. Mobile coupons, digital loyalty cards, e-tickets, click-and-collect confirmations and payment QR codes are all screen-based, and no laser scanner can read any of them. Counters still running lasers lose these interactions quietly - the customer holds up a phone, nothing happens, and the transaction is resolved by manual entry or by dropping the discount.

It also handles GS1 DataBar, which is increasingly used on fresh produce and pharmacy items where batch and expiry data have to fit into a small code. If you sell anything perishable or dispensed, this is not optional for much longer.

Setup and fleet configuration

Over USB the scanner presents as a keyboard, so scanned data lands wherever the cursor sits with no driver installed. That works with any POS, spreadsheet or web form that accepts typed input, which makes a single unit usable within seconds of unboxing.

For anything beyond default behaviour, Zebra's free 123Scan utility handles prefixes, suffixes and enabled symbologies. Configure one scanner, export the settings, apply to the rest of the fleet. Rolling out thirty identically configured units across several stores becomes an afternoon rather than a technician visit per site.

One piece of advice that applies to every imager: disable the symbologies you do not use. A capable scanner reading continuously will decode any code that passes through its field, including one on the side of a carton you never meant to capture.

Where it belongs

Convenience and specialty retail, pharmacy counters, hardware and trade counters, garden centres, pet stores, click-and-collect desks, and any counter mixing small scanned items with bulky ones. The pattern is a fixed position with a genuinely mixed item profile.

For a full grocery belt with a bagging area, an in-counter horizontal unit integrates better. For warehouse floors, freezers or yards, the 1.5 m drop rating is not enough and a rugged model such as the DS3678 is required.
