Food and Agriculture Hardware: Washdown, Cold and Labels
Food processing and agriculture combine two conditions that are individually manageable and together eliminate most equipment: high-pressure cleaning with chemicals, and temperature extremes with constant moisture.
Washdown is the defining requirement
Food production areas are cleaned aggressively, frequently with hot water at pressure and with caustic or acidic agents.
That is a different requirement from an IP rating for rain or splashing. High-pressure cleaning drives water past seals that would keep out weather, and it does so repeatedly, every shift.
Two things follow.
Check the rating against high-pressure and high-temperature cleaning specifically, not against a general dust and water figure. Our outdoor guide covers reading IP ratings properly — the two digits describe different things and neither describes chemical resistance.
Chemical tolerance is a separate question. A device sealed against water may still degrade under repeated exposure to cleaning agents, with seals and housings affected before electronics are.
Housing material matters here in a way it does not elsewhere. Smooth surfaces without seams, crevices or recesses are easier to clean and give bacteria nowhere to sit — which is a hygiene requirement rather than a convenience.
Cold and wet at the same time
Food environments frequently combine chilled or frozen areas with high humidity, which is harder on equipment than either alone.
The mechanism is the one covered in our cold chain guide: workers moving between a chilled production area and a warmer packing hall carry devices through repeated temperature crossings, and moisture condenses inside.
The distinction to make when specifying is between a device rated to operate cold and one built for repeated crossings. The second is what survives.
Ask specifically whether workers stay in one zone or move between them — that single answer changes the specification.
Labels in food environments
Where most complaints originate, and it is almost never the printer.
Facestock. Paper fails immediately in moisture. Synthetic stock is the baseline, not an upgrade.
Ribbon. Resin, which bonds with synthetic facestock and resists moisture, abrasion and cleaning agents. Wax smears off within a shift in these conditions. Our media guide covers the pairings.
Adhesive. This is the specific one. Labels applied to cold, damp product need adhesive rated for application at low temperature, not merely for storage cold after warm application. Standard adhesive on a chilled surface fails silently, and the label is found on the floor rather than the product.
Where labels contact food or food surfaces, materials may be subject to requirements — confirm what applies to your process rather than assuming a general-purpose label is acceptable.
Date and traceability labelling
Frequently the reason the printer is there at all, and it carries a compliance dimension.
Batch codes, use-by dates and lot identifiers are what make a recall possible and bounded. If those labels are unreadable, a recall widens.
Two practical consequences.
Print quality is not cosmetic. A degraded code that scans in the packing hall may fail at a customer’s goods-in, and a code that cannot be read at all breaks the traceability chain. Our verification guide covers why scanning is not verifying, and why declining print grades are an early warning.
Trading partners frequently specify the format. Retailers commonly mandate GS1 structures carrying batch and date as application identifiers, and getting the structure wrong means rejected deliveries rather than unreadable labels. Printer placement
Printers do not tolerate washdown, and putting one in a wash area is a short-lived arrangement.
Where possible, print outside the wash zone and apply inside. Where printing must happen in the area, an enclosure rated for the conditions is the usual answer.
Two related points. Media stored in chilled areas carries condensation into the printer when loaded — let it acclimatise or store it outside the cold zone. Scanning in production
Two patterns, and the environment pushes toward one of them.
Fixed-mount scanners reading product as it passes a station keep the reader out of hands and can be positioned away from the worst of the washdown, or enclosed. Where flow is continuous and consistent, this is usually better than handhelds.
Handhelds for goods-in, quality checks and rework, where the operator brings the code to the reader. These need the washdown and glove considerations above — gloves are worn constantly here, and touchscreen response through gloves varies considerably between devices.
Where operators need to see and record information rather than only capture codes, that is a mobile computer, with the same cleanability requirement applying to it.
Specifying for food and agriculture
Is the equipment in a washdown area, and at what pressure and temperature. What cleaning agents are used. Do workers cross between chilled and warm zones, and how often. Are labels applied to cold or damp surfaces. Are gloves worn constantly. Do trading partners specify a label format. And what happens to traceability if a code cannot be read.
Those seven answers eliminate most of the market and leave equipment that survives the environment.
