The ST1000LM035 is a Seagate BarraCuda 1TB 2.5 inch laptop drive, and it appears in server searches because 2.5 inch drives fit server bays physically. Physical fit is not compatibility. This covers why.

What is the Seagate ST1000LM035?

A 2.5 inch, 7mm, 1TB, SATA 6Gb/s laptop hard drive from the BarraCuda mobile family. 5400 RPM class, shingled magnetic recording (SMR), designed for notebooks and thin systems.

The full part number includes a revision suffix such as -1RK172. Revisions differ in firmware and internal configuration. Our part numbers guide covers reading suffixes.

Will a laptop drive fit a server bay?

Physically, sometimes. Usefully, no.

Three separate problems.

Height. Server 2.5 inch bays are designed for 15mm drives; laptop drives are 7mm or 9.5mm. A 7mm drive in a 15mm carrier may not seat properly against the backplane connector, and carriers are built for the taller drive.

It is mobile class. Workload rating is for intermittent laptop use, not continuous operation. Error recovery behaviour is desktop-style, which causes RAID controllers to drop the drive as failed. Our drive class guide covers this.

Where the ST1000LM035 is fine

Laptop and notebook upgrades or replacements, its intended role.

Thin external USB enclosures, where 7mm height is required.

Bulk storage in a small form factor system with backup elsewhere.

It is not a bad drive; it is a drive for portable systems.

What to use in a server 2.5 inch bay instead

Enterprise SSDs, which are 2.5 inch 7mm or 15mm and designed for server bays. For small capacities in a server, an SSD is almost always the better answer than a 1TB mechanical drive. Our PM883 guide covers one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a laptop hard drive in a server?

Not usefully. Height differs (7mm laptop versus 15mm server bays), it is SMR so rebuilds can fail, and mobile-class workload rating and error recovery are wrong for an array.

Yes. Shingled magnetic recording, which is common on high-capacity 2.5 inch laptop drives.
