Waste operations run hardware in vehicles, on collection rounds, and around weighbridges — three environments with different demands, tied together by a record that has to hold up for regulatory reporting.
In-cab hardware
The vehicle is the workplace, which drives the specification.
Vibration is continuous on a collection vehicle, and it affects mounts and connectors more than housings. A mount that works loose is a daily annoyance and eventually a damaged device.

Screen readability varies through the round — bright streets, dark early mornings, and glare through a windscreen. A display fine indoors can be effectively blank in direct sun.

Bin and container identification
Where the record starts, and where it most often breaks.
Tags on bins live outdoors for years, are handled by lifting mechanisms, dragged along the ground and exposed to weather and whatever is in the bin.
Two consequences.
Adhesive labels alone rarely survive. Where labels are used, thermal transfer onto synthetic facestock with a resin ribbon is the minimum, with adhesive matched to the plastic surface and to the temperature at application. This is a strong RFID case. A tag embedded in or fixed to the bin, read automatically as the bin is lifted, needs no line of sight, no operator action and no clean surface. That is precisely what RFID does well — and it is why bin identification is one of the sectors where it is genuinely standard rather than aspirational.
Where barcodes are used, expect them dirty and damaged, which argues for 2D imagers with error correction rather than lasers.
Weighbridge operations
A fixed point with its own requirements.
Vehicle identification on arrival and departure, frequently by scanning a card, a windscreen tag or a plate reference.
Ticket printing for the driver, which is the record of what was delivered and weighed. That printer is on the critical path — if it stops, vehicles queue.

The record has a regulatory dimension
Which changes how the data capture is treated.
Waste movements are typically subject to reporting requirements covering what was collected, from where, in what quantity and where it went. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and change, so confirm what applies rather than assuming.
Three consequences for the hardware.
Capture at the point of collection, not reconstructed afterwards from a paper note.
Evidence for exceptions. Contaminated loads, refused collections, obstructed access — photographs and structured exception codes rather than free text, so the record is consistent and defensible.
Time and location recorded automatically rather than entered.

Connectivity on the round
Collection rounds pass through areas with no signal — rural roads, underground service areas, dense urban blackspots.
Offline capture is a requirement. Collections, exceptions and photographs recorded while disconnected and uploaded on reconnection, preserving the true time of the event rather than the upload time.

Fleet management
Devices are in vehicles, shared across shifts and crews, and rarely come back to an office.
Keep spares configured and charged rather than boxed, since a device failing at the start of a round means a round run on paper. Specifying for waste operations
Is the device vehicle-mounted or carried. Is vehicle power available. Are bins identified by tag or label, and how old are the existing ones. Is there reliable signal on the round, or must everything work offline. What exceptions must be evidenced. And what happens if the weighbridge printer stops.
