HP (HPQ) Issues BIOS Fix After Windows 11 Update Failures

HP Inc. (NYSE: HPQ) has released a BIOS firmware update after users reported that a Windows 11 security patch from Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) leaves affected laptops stuck at the boot screen and rolls itself back.

The patch is KB5121003, the August 2026 Patch Tuesday release, which is also folded into the September updates. On affected HP systems the update installs, then hangs at the boot logo during the required restart. A forced shutdown sends the machine into Automatic Repair, which recovers the system and reverses the update. Users who downloaded and installed the patch manually report the same result.

HP support told affected users that the update had corrupted BIOS settings, with the recommended remedy being to enter the BIOS, load default settings and save. One HP OmniBook X owner reported that after doing so, a later preview update installed and KB5121003 disappeared from the pending queue.

HP has since issued BIOS version F.07 Rev.A, whose release notes state that it improves system stability when Windows Update runs. The firmware was published on 4 September.

The problem does not appear confined to HP. An IT administrator at a managed service provider reported the same installation failures across client organisations on Lenovo and Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE: DELL) machines. Separately, Lenovo laptops have shown random AC power disconnection while charging, which rolling back the update resolves.

Microsoft has not acknowledged the HP boot failure, and neither Lenovo nor Microsoft has commented on the power disconnection reports.
