IBM COBOL Elevate for z/OS Reaches General Availability

International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) reaches general availability for IBM COBOL Elevate for z/OS on 18 September, the final piece of a z17 portfolio expansion the company announced in July.

The tool is aimed at optimising COBOL applications running on IBM z17. That matters because COBOL modernisation remains the practical obstacle for most mainframe estates, where the code carrying core transaction processing predates the infrastructure it now runs on.

The wider expansion changed the shape of the platform rather than its architecture. IBM announced new z17 and LinuxONE 5 configurations on 7 July, offering rack mount alongside single frame systems across the full Z and LinuxONE portfolio for the first time. The z17 single frame, z17 rack mount, LinuxONE Rockhopper 5 and LinuxONE 5 Express reached general availability on 12 August, with IBM Infrastructure Management for Z and LinuxONE following on 14 August.

The smaller configurations carry the same Telum II processor with on chip AI acceleration and accept the Spyre Accelerator. Post quantum cryptography is now standard on z17 and Rockhopper 5 systems, alongside confidential computing and enterprise wide secrets management.

The commercial logic sits in data centre economics. IBM cited CBRE's 2026 Global Data Center Trends report, which records low vacancy and rental rates exceeding $400 per kW per month in some markets. A rack mount option lets organisations that need the platform's resilience and compliance profile fit it into a smaller footprint alongside standard data centre equipment.
