Juniper QFX Switches Head Into Oracle AI Data Centres

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (NYSE: HPE) said on 2 September that Oracle Corp. (NYSE: ORCL) plans a multi year, global deployment of HPE Juniper Networking across one of the largest AI infrastructure buildouts in the industry, in an expanded collaboration between the two companies.

The announcement is the clearest commercial evidence so far of what HPE bought when it completed its $14 billion acquisition of Juniper Networks. HPE has said the transaction doubles the size of its networking business.

The Oracle deployment centres on Juniper QFX switches. HPE said the switches provide the high density connectivity, dynamic load balancing and congestion management that large RoCEv2 backend networks require. RDMA over Converged Ethernet is the fabric that carries traffic between AI accelerators, and congestion behaviour there determines whether expensive GPU capacity sits idle waiting for data.

HPE also said a common networking foundation across these environments simplifies engineering and operations while allowing each domain to be tuned separately.

The acquisition itself cleared a long regulatory path. A court approved HPE's settlement with the US Department of Justice, which had initially sought to block the deal over competition in enterprise wireless LAN used by large companies, universities and hospitals. Under the settlement HPE is required to license Juniper's Mist AI Ops source code through an auction process, on perpetual and non-exclusive terms with optional transitional support. The UK Competition and Markets Authority cleared the takeover in August.
