What Makes a Scanner Rugged
Rugged scanners are designed around the fact that in industrial work they will be dropped, knocked off forklifts, used with gloves and exposed to dust, moisture and cold. They have reinforced housings, sealed windows and components rated for repeated drops onto hard surfaces, and they read codes on dirty, scratched or shrink wrapped labels that would defeat a retail scanner. A standard scanner in these environments is a false saving, because replacement cost and downtime quickly exceed the price difference.
The Three Rugged Models
The Zebra DS3678 is a cordless rugged scanner used widely in warehousing and manufacturing, combining industrial durability with the freedom to move around the site. The Datalogic PowerScan PD9630 is a corded rugged scanner for fixed industrial stations such as production lines and packing benches where a cable is not a limitation. The Honeywell Granit XP 1991iXR is an ultra rugged extended range model that reads labels from a distance, such as pallet tags on high racking, without the operator needing to climb or lift the item.
