The 12Gb/s SAS 15K drive is, in all likelihood, the last generation of its kind. Nobody is developing faster mechanical storage, because flash took that role and is not giving it back.

The HGST Ultrastar 0B33079 is a 600GB SAS 12Gb/s 15K 2.5-inch drive — the highest interface generation and near the capacity ceiling that 15K spindles ever reached.

Why 15K development stopped

Mechanical storage improved for decades by spinning faster and packing bits more densely. 15,000 RPM turned out to be roughly where the first of those ran out.

Beyond that speed the engineering costs rise sharply. Platters have to be smaller to stay stable, tolerances tighter, power draw and heat higher. Each increment bought less latency improvement for more cost.

Then flash arrived at enterprise prices and removed the reason to keep pushing. An SSD does not seek at all, so it beats any mechanical drive on latency by an order of magnitude that no amount of spindle speed could close. Development effort moved, and 15K drives stopped advancing.

What that means practically: this drive represents a mature, finished technology. It is not going to be superseded by a faster mechanical equivalent, because there will not be one.

Where 15K still earns its place

Being clear about this matters, because the honest answer is narrower than it was ten years ago and wider than "nowhere".

Maintaining an existing array. The strongest case by far. An array built on 15K spindles is not improved by adding an SSD, because a RAID group degrades to its slowest member. Replace like for like and plan any flash migration as a separate project.

Sustained write-heavy workloads. Enterprise SSDs are rated by drive writes per day, and write-intensive models carry a substantial premium. A mechanical drive has no equivalent wear ceiling; it fails over time rather than wearing out through writes. For heavy sustained writes that do not need flash latency, that removes a whole cost dimension.

Cost per gigabyte at acceptable IOPS. Where the working set is large and the latency requirement is moderate rather than critical, an array of 15K spindles still delivers adequate performance for far less per gigabyte than enterprise flash with comparable endurance.

Where 15K is now the wrong answer: any new latency-critical tier. If you are specifying storage for a demanding transactional workload today, flash is the correct starting point and 15K is a fallback for budget reasons rather than a technical choice.

Planning a migration off 15K, if you decide to

For anyone whose 15K arrays are ageing, three points worth building into the plan.

Do it as a project, not incrementally. Replacing failed 15K drives one at a time with SSDs achieves nothing, because the RAID group runs at its slowest member. Either the whole group moves or none of it does.

Tier rather than replace wholesale. Most workloads do not need flash throughout. Moving the genuinely latency-critical volumes to SSD and leaving the rest on 15K or nearline is usually cheaper and performs better than a uniform upgrade.

Keep 15K spares until the migration completes. A drive failing mid-project on an array you are about to retire still has to be fixed, and "we are replacing it soon" is not a rebuild. Hold spares through the transition.

Meanwhile, the drives you have are fine. A working 15K array does not become worse because a better technology exists.

Bare drive, no OEM carrier

This is the manufacturer part with no server carrier and no OEM firmware coding, which suits Supermicro, white-box and generic-tray chassis and costs less than the OEM-branded equivalent of the same mechanism.

Yes, at 6Gb/s. SAS negotiates to the lower of the two speeds, and on a mechanical drive the spindle limits throughput long before the interface does. That makes it easy to standardise a mixed-generation fleet on one part number.
