2.5 inch and 3.5 inch are the two hard drive form factors, and which one you need is decided by the chassis rather than by preference. This covers what actually differs, and the height question that catches people.

What is the difference between 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives?

Physical size, and everything that follows from it.

3.5 inch drives have larger platters, which means more capacity per drive and better cost per terabyte. They draw more power, run hotter and are heavier. All the highest-capacity drives are 3.5 inch.

2.5 inch drives are smaller, use less power, and allow far more drives per rack unit. Capacities top out much lower, and cost per terabyte is worse. All 10K and 15K enterprise drives are now 2.5 inch.

The two are not interchangeable in a bay. A 3.5 inch drive does not fit a 2.5 inch bay at all; a 2.5 inch drive can go into a 3.5 inch bay with an adapter, which the section below covers.

Drive height: 7mm, 9.5mm and 15mm

The specification that catches people, because "2.5 inch" describes the width, not the thickness.

7mm β€” thin laptop drives and most 2.5 inch SSDs.

9.5mm β€” standard laptop drives.

15mm β€” enterprise 2.5 inch drives, which need the extra height for more platters.

A 15mm drive will not fit a laptop bay. A 7mm drive in a 15mm server carrier may not seat properly against the backplane connector. Our laptop drive guide covers why a thin drive is the wrong part for a server bay.

SSDs are usually 7mm and are designed to work in server bays at that height, because they have no platters to accommodate.

Can I put a 2.5 inch drive in a 3.5 inch bay?

With an adapter, and the adapter matters.

In a server hot-swap bay, you need a hybrid carrier β€” a 3.5 inch carrier with a 2.5 inch adapter built in, so the drive connector lines up with the backplane. A generic bracket does not do this reliably. Our caddies guide covers carrier types.

In a desktop or fixed-drive system, a simple mounting bracket is fine, because the drive is cabled rather than seated against a backplane.

The reverse is never possible: a 3.5 inch drive cannot go into a 2.5 inch bay under any circumstances.

Which should I buy for a server?

The chassis decides, but where you have a choice:

3.5 inch for capacity. Nearline tiers, backup targets, archive. Best cost per terabyte, and the only option above a certain capacity. Our 16TB Exos guide covers the capacity end.

Which for a NAS?

Almost always 3.5 inch. Desktop NAS units are built around 3.5 inch bays because the point is capacity per bay, and NAS-class drives at high capacities are all 3.5 inch.

Some compact NAS units take 2.5 inch drives only, usually aimed at SSDs. Check the enclosure before buying. Our drive class guide covers what class a NAS needs.

Not inherently. Rotational speed and interface decide speed, not size. All 10K and 15K enterprise drives are 2.5 inch; 3.5 inch drives are almost all 7200 RPM or slower, built for capacity rather than speed.

Which is better for a NAS?

Almost always 3.5 inch, because NAS units are built around capacity per bay and high-capacity NAS drives are all 3.5 inch. Some compact units take 2.5 inch only, usually for SSDs.

Do SSDs come in 3.5 inch?

Rarely. Enterprise SSDs are 2.5 inch, typically 7mm or 15mm, or they use M.2, U.2 or add-in card form factors. For a 3.5 inch bay an SSD needs an adapter.
