Hotels run several small operations that each need different hardware — a front desk, housekeeping across floors, maintenance, and stores — in a building where guests are present and equipment cannot look or sound industrial.
Front desk
A counter operation with an unusual constraint: it is part of the guest’s first impression.
Three practical points.
Footprint and appearance matter. A desk is visible, frequently small, and holds a terminal, a printer, a payment terminal and a key encoder. Housekeeping
The largest device deployment in most hotels, and the one most often specified as an afterthought.
Housekeeping staff move between floors, work in rooms and corridors, and carry a device through a full shift alongside cleaning equipment.

Cleanable. Devices used with cleaning products need housings that tolerate repeated wiping, and seams that trap fluid are a problem.
Coverage across the whole building. This is the recurring hotel problem — stairwells, lift lobbies, back corridors and older wings with thick walls are frequently dead spots. A device that loses connection mid-room means status updates queue or get lost.
That makes offline capability and batch mode important: room status, maintenance reports and minibar charges recorded while disconnected and uploaded on reconnection. Maintenance and engineering
Closer to field service than to hospitality.
Engineers work in plant rooms, roof spaces, lift motor rooms and basements — the parts of a hotel with no coverage and poor lighting.
Requirements follow: offline working, adequate camera for recording faults in poor light, and a device that survives being set down on hard surfaces.
Asset tagging matters here too. Stores and receiving

Guest-facing scanning
Increasingly common and worth one specific note.
Where guests present anything on a phone — booking confirmations, loyalty credentials, digital keys, event tickets — a laser scanner will never read it. Lasers detect reflected light from printed codes and a backlit screen does not present that.

Specifying a hotel
Is coverage genuinely complete, including stairwells, back corridors and older wings. Is the housekeeping device carried all day, and is it cleaned with chemicals. Do engineers work in areas with no signal. Are guests presenting anything on phone screens. Does the front desk printer sit on the critical path at peaks. And are food stores chilled.
