Getting the part right the first time
Most returns are compatibility, not quality, and at Idaho transit distances a wrong part is expensive twice over. The same five things cause almost all of them.
Drive carriers. A drive without the right caddy will not go in the bay. Carriers are chassis and generation specific — an HPE Smart Carrier from one generation does not fit another — and empty bays rarely ship with them. Sector format. 512n, 512e and 4Kn are not interchangeable in an array, and the problem usually surfaces during a rebuild rather than at installation.
Memory rank and type. RDIMM and LRDIMM do not mix in the same system, and populating more ranks per channel can force the whole bank to downclock.
Processor pairing. Both sockets need matching models, and a CPU upgrade frequently needs a BIOS level and sometimes a different heatsink.
Transceiver coding. Many switches only accept transceivers coded for that vendor, and an uncoded SFP+ is simply refused.

Cold, wet and washdown environments
Idaho processing operations get this wrong more often than anything else, and the cost is equipment replaced every year instead of every five. Three separate requirements, and they are not the same thing.
Cold rating. Freezer operation sits below what standard units are rated for. Below that range batteries lose capacity rapidly, displays respond slowly and the device may refuse to operate.
Ingress protection. Washdown areas need equipment sealed against water and dust. A device that is merely rugged against drops is not sealed against a hose.
Condensation management. Equipment crossing between freezer and ambient forms condensation, which is a separate problem from cold rating.

Altitude, dry air and winter
Three conditions affect Idaho operations that warmer, lower states do not raise.
Altitude. Air is thinner at elevation and carries less heat away. Manufacturers publish a maximum operating altitude and, above a certain elevation, a derated maximum operating temperature — the higher you are, the cooler the room has to be. Boise sits around 2,700 feet, Pocatello above 4,400 and Sun Valley far higher, so check the manufacturer specification for the actual site.
Dry air. Idaho humidity is low, and dry air holds static charge. Memory modules, controllers and bare drive electronics are what gets damaged, and most of that damage is latent — the part works, passes testing and fails earlier than it should.
Winter condensation. Equipment off a cold truck brought straight into a heated room can form condensation internally. Allow several hours to reach room temperature, and if the packaging still feels cold it is not ready.

Do you supply scanners for food processing and cold storage?
Yes. Tell us the operating temperature range and whether washdown occurs and we will specify cold-rated and sealed units rather than standard equipment.
What is the difference between rugged and washdown-rated?
Rugged means built to survive drops. Washdown means sealed against water and dust ingress. A device that is merely rugged is not sealed against a hose.
Why does equipment fail moving between freezer and ambient?
Condensation, which is a separate problem from cold rating. Equipment designed for freezer-to-ambient cycling handles it; equipment that is not, fails.
Why does our scanning equipment last less than a year?
Usually because standard equipment was supplied into a cold, wet or washdown environment. Specifying correctly at purchase is far cheaper than replacing annually — particularly at Idaho shipping distances.
Do scanner batteries perform worse in cold?
Yes, markedly. A scanner that will not hold a shift in a freezer is frequently a battery rating problem rather than a faulty unit.
What label media works in wet and frozen conditions?

Which LTO generations are backwards compatible?
LTO drives generally read two generations back and write one generation back, with limits that changed from LTO-8 onward. Tell us the drive and the media you hold.

Do you state condition on every line?

Spindle speed trades capacity for latency. 15K SAS suits transactional workloads, 10K is the general-purpose middle, and 7,200 RPM nearline gives the most capacity per bay for archives.
What does nearline SAS mean?
A 7,200 RPM high-capacity drive with a SAS interface rather than SATA. You get capacity economics with SAS queueing and dual-port capability.

What is the difference between read intensive and mixed use SSDs?
Endurance. Read intensive drives are rated around 1 DWPD; mixed use is typically 3 DWPD for databases and virtualisation. A read intensive drive in a write-heavy role wears out early.
What do DWPD and TBW mean?
Drive writes per day and terabytes written — how much can be written over the warranted life. Match the rating to the workload.
What is U.2 and how does it differ from U.3?
Both are 2.5 inch NVMe form factors. U.3 backplanes accept U.2 drives, but U.2 backplanes do not accept U.3 — the compatibility runs one way only.
What is sector format and why does it matter?
512n, 512e and 4Kn describe how a drive presents its sectors. Mixing formats in one array is refused or unpredictable, and it frequently surfaces during a rebuild rather than at installation.
Should I avoid SMR drives in an array?
Yes, always. SMR write performance collapses part-way through sustained writes, and a rebuild onto an SMR drive can fail outright. We state CMR or SMR on every listing.
Can you tell me the drive hours before I buy?
Yes. The drive reports it exactly and we check before listing.

Do you supply RAID controllers?

Do you supply RAID cache batteries and capacitor packs?
Yes. This is the part that fails silently — the controller drops the array into write-through and performance falls off with no obvious error.
What is an IT mode HBA and when do I need one?
A host bus adapter that passes drives through to the operating system without RAID abstraction — an LSI 9207-8i or 9300-8i, for instance. Software-defined storage and ZFS need it.

Will an HPE Smart Carrier from one generation fit another?
No. Smart Carrier trays changed across generations and do not cross. Tell us the server model and generation.
Do you supply server rails, risers, backplanes, fans and heatsinks?
Yes, all of them. Rails are chassis and rack specific; risers determine which PCIe slots are usable and at what lane width; heatsinks are frequently processor and chassis specific.

What server memory do you stock?

What is the difference between RDIMM, UDIMM and LRDIMM?
RDIMM buffers the address and command lines, LRDIMM buffers the data lines too and allows much higher total capacity, and UDIMM is unbuffered. They do not mix in the same system.
Why is my DDR4-3200 memory running at 2666?
Population rules. Filling more ranks or more slots per channel forces the bank to downclock, and the processor also has a maximum supported speed.
Do you supply Xeon E5 v3 and v4 processors?
Yes, along with Xeon Scalable Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum from 8 to 28 cores, and AMD EPYC and Opteron.
Can I mix different Xeon models in a dual socket server?
No. Both sockets need matching models. A mismatched pair either refuses to boot or runs on one socket.
Do you supply server power supplies?
Yes, by wattage — 495W, 750W, 800W, 1100W and above — for HPE, Dell and Supermicro platforms.
Should an Idaho site hold a spare power supply?
For any server without redundancy, yes. At this shipping distance a failed PSU on a single-supply machine is days of downtime rather than hours.
Do you supply rack PDUs and UPS units?

There is a white line through every label. What is wrong?
A dead heating element in the printhead. It appears in the same position on every label, does not heal, and more elements will follow.
Why is my printer skipping labels?
Calibration. The printer detects label boundaries with a sensor, and changing media size, liner or gap requires recalibrating.
Do you supply label printers for Idaho healthcare?

Will a 1D laser scanner read 2D codes used in component marking?
No. Data Matrix codes are 2D and require an imager. A 1D laser cannot read them at all.
