Getting the part right the first time
Most returns are compatibility, not quality, and the same five things cause almost all of them.
Drive carriers. A drive without the right caddy will not go in the bay. Carriers are chassis and generation specific — an HPE Smart Carrier from one generation does not fit another — and empty bays rarely ship with them. This is the most common omission in a drive order, which is why we stock caddies and trays alongside the drives.
Sector format. 512n, 512e and 4Kn are not interchangeable in an array, and the problem usually surfaces during a rebuild rather than at installation.
Memory rank and type. RDIMM and LRDIMM do not mix in the same system, and populating more ranks per channel can force the whole bank to downclock — DDR4-3200 modules running at 2933 or 2666 because of population rules, not because the modules are wrong.
Processor pairing. Both sockets need matching models, and a CPU upgrade frequently needs a BIOS level and sometimes a different heatsink.
Transceiver coding. Many switches only accept transceivers coded for that vendor, and an uncoded SFP+ is simply refused.

It can. Converted closets and basement rooms with marginal cooling run equipment warmer than a purpose-built room, which shortens drive life and causes throttling. Tell us before you specify a dense configuration.
Why is my server slow with no errors showing?
Frequently thermal throttling. Processors reduce speed to stay within limits and report no fault. Check intake temperature, fans and air baffles — and check the RAID cache battery, which causes the same symptom for a different reason.
Do power sags and brief outages damage IT hardware?
Yes. Repeated sags and outages shorten the life of drives, controllers, printers and network hardware, and older building stock sees more of both.
How often should UPS batteries be replaced?
On schedule rather than on failure, and test under real load — a self-test draws far less than a real outage and can report healthy on a battery with little runtime left.

What storage suits long-retention digital archives?

Do you supply LTO tape drives and media?

Which LTO generations are backwards compatible?

What enterprise hard drive capacities do you stock?

What is the difference between 15K, 10K and 7,200 RPM drives?
Spindle speed trades capacity for latency. 15K SAS suits transactional workloads, 10K is the general-purpose middle, and 7,200 RPM nearline gives the most capacity per bay for archives.
What does nearline SAS mean?
A 7,200 RPM high-capacity drive with a SAS interface rather than SATA. You get capacity economics with SAS queueing and dual-port capability.
What enterprise SSD capacities and brands do you carry?

What is the difference between read intensive and mixed use SSDs?
Endurance. Read intensive drives are rated around 1 DWPD; mixed use is typically 3 DWPD for databases and virtualisation. A read intensive drive in a write-heavy role wears out early.
What do DWPD and TBW mean?
Drive writes per day and terabytes written — how much can be written over the warranted life. Match the rating to the workload.
What is power loss protection and why does it matter?
Capacitors that let an SSD complete in-flight writes when power is lost. It is the difference that matters most between consumer and enterprise flash, and it matters more in buildings that see power sags.
What is U.2 and how does it differ from U.3?
Both are 2.5 inch NVMe form factors. U.3 backplanes accept U.2 drives, but U.2 backplanes do not accept U.3 — the compatibility runs one way only.
What is sector format and why does it matter?
512n, 512e and 4Kn describe how a drive presents its sectors. Mixing formats in one array is refused or unpredictable, and it frequently surfaces during a rebuild rather than at installation.
Should I avoid SMR drives in an array?
Yes, always. SMR write performance collapses part-way through sustained writes, and a rebuild onto an SMR drive can fail outright. We state CMR or SMR on every listing.
Can you tell me the drive hours before I buy?
Yes. The drive reports it exactly and we check before listing.

Do you supply RAID controllers?

Do you supply RAID cache batteries and capacitor packs?
Yes. This is the part that fails silently — the controller drops the array into write-through and performance falls off with no obvious error.
What is an IT mode HBA and when do I need one?
A host bus adapter that passes drives through to the operating system without RAID abstraction — an LSI 9207-8i or 9300-8i, for instance. Software-defined storage and ZFS need it.
Do you supply drive caddies and trays?
Yes — Dell drive caddies and HPE Smart Carrier trays, plus drive blanks. We stock them alongside the drives.
Will an HPE Smart Carrier from one generation fit another?
No. Smart Carrier trays changed across generations and do not cross. Tell us the server model and generation.
Do you supply server rails, risers, backplanes, fans and heatsinks?
Yes, all of them. Rails are chassis and rack specific; risers determine which PCIe slots are usable and at what lane width; heatsinks are frequently processor and chassis specific.

What server memory do you stock?

What is the difference between RDIMM, UDIMM and LRDIMM?
RDIMM buffers the address and command lines, LRDIMM buffers the data lines too and allows much higher total capacity, and UDIMM is unbuffered. They do not mix in the same system.
Why is my DDR4-3200 memory running at 2666?
Population rules. Filling more ranks or more slots per channel forces the bank to downclock, and the processor also has a maximum supported speed.
Do you supply Xeon E5 v3 and v4 processors?
Yes, along with Xeon Scalable Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum from 8 to 28 cores, and AMD EPYC and Opteron.
Can I mix different Xeon models in a dual socket server?
No. Both sockets need matching models. A mismatched pair either refuses to boot or runs on one socket.
Do you supply server power supplies?
Yes, by wattage — 495W, 750W, 800W, 1100W and above — for HPE, Dell and Supermicro platforms.
Can I mix power supply wattages in one server?
Generally no. Redundant supplies should match on wattage and usually on part number; a mismatched pair commonly logs a fault and may not provide redundancy at all.
Do you supply rack PDUs and UPS units?
Yes, including UPS battery replacements.
Do you supply SFP+ and QSFP transceivers?
Yes, including SFP-10G-SR, QSFP+ and QSFP28.
Will any SFP+ transceiver work in my switch?
Often not. Many switches only accept transceivers coded for that vendor and simply refuse others. Tell us the switch make and model.
Do you supply 10GbE network adapters and switches?
Yes — Intel X520 and X710, Mellanox ConnectX and Broadcom adapters, plus Cisco Catalyst and comparable PoE+ and 10GbE switches by port count.
Labelling, healthcare, POS and printheads
Do you supply label printers for District healthcare?
Yes. Zebra and SATO printers for patient identification, wristband and specimen labelling, plus genuine replacement printheads.
Should specimen labels be direct thermal or thermal transfer?
Thermal transfer with a resin ribbon for anything with a long life. Direct thermal fades with heat, light and time, and a specimen label that becomes unreadable means a sample that cannot be identified.
How many spare printheads should an operation hold?
At least one per printer model in continuous use. Printheads are consumables with a rated life measured in linear distance printed, not parts that fail unexpectedly.
How do I know which printhead my printer needs?
Read the part number off the existing printhead or the printer label. Printheads differ by resolution for the same printer model and do not cross between models.
There is a white line through every label. What is wrong?
A dead heating element in the printhead. It appears in the same position on every label, does not heal, and more elements will follow.
Why is my printer skipping labels?
Calibration. The printer detects label boundaries with a sensor, and changing media size, liner or gap requires recalibrating.
Why is my label print faded?
Check a dirty printhead first, then darkness setting, then whether the ribbon type suits the media, then printhead wear. Do not simply raise the darkness.
Do you supply scanners for asset tracking and inventory?
Yes. Zebra, Honeywell and Datalogic handhelds and rugged mobile computers, supplied with the correct interface cable for your host system.
Will a 1D laser scanner read 2D codes?
No. Data Matrix and QR codes are 2D and require an imager. A 1D laser cannot read them at all.
Do you supply POS receipt printers for District retail and hospitality?
Yes. Epson, Star Micronics and Bixolon receipt printers, including impact printers for kitchens where heat and grease make thermal receipts unreadable within hours.
Condition, testing and returns
What condition is your hardware in?
We state the condition on every line. Ask for the specific condition, the testing performed and the drive hours where applicable.
Is your hardware tested?
Testing is performed where applicable and we will tell you what was done. A power-on check and a full surface test are different things and we do not describe one as the other.
What is your return policy?
30 days. Raise a problem promptly — the sooner it is raised, the more options there are.
Should I test hardware when it arrives?
Yes, before it goes into production.
Will you tell me if I am buying the wrong thing?
Yes. Several of our guides recommend against a purchase where the workload does not justify it, and we apply the same approach to quotes.
