HP Integrity is not HP ProLiant. They shared a manufacturer and almost nothing else, and confusing the two is how the wrong drive gets ordered for an Integrity system.
The HP AB432-69001 is a 146GB SAS 15K 2.5-inch drive for Integrity servers — the Itanium-based platform HP built for mission-critical workloads running HP-UX, OpenVMS and NonStop.
What Integrity was, and why systems are still running
Integrity servers ran Intel Itanium processors and targeted a specific market: workloads where downtime was unacceptable and the operating system was HP-UX, OpenVMS or NonStop rather than Windows or Linux.
Itanium is gone. The platform is end of life. Yet Integrity systems remain in production in banking, insurance, telecoms, manufacturing and government, and the reason is straightforward: the applications running on them cannot easily be moved.
An OpenVMS application written for a specific platform, maintained for decades, integrated into everything around it, is not a candidate for a weekend migration. Organisations running these systems have usually costed a migration and concluded that keeping the platform alive is cheaper and less risky, at least for now.
That decision creates a parts problem. HP stopped supplying Integrity components, and the systems still need drives.

Why an Integrity part number is not a ProLiant one
Both are HP. Both are SAS. The drive mechanism inside may even be similar. They are still not interchangeable, for reasons that sit above the mechanism.
Carrier design. Integrity chassis use their own drive carriers, distinct from the ProLiant Smart Carrier trays. A ProLiant drive will not seat.
Firmware. Integrity controllers expect firmware validated for the platform. The drive may be recognised incorrectly or not at all with ProLiant firmware.
Part number conventions. Integrity parts use different numbering ranges entirely, which is actually helpful — if the part number does not match what your documentation says, it is not the right drive.
The practical rule is the same one that applies to every OEM platform: order against the part number recorded in your system documentation or read off a drive currently fitted, not against capacity and interface. The capacity looks tiny by current standards, and it was never the point. Mission-critical transactional systems — the databases and transaction processors these machines were built for — are latency-bound rather than capacity-bound.
At 15,000 RPM this was the fastest mechanical storage available, and arrays were built with many spindles rather than few large ones because IOPS scale with spindle count. Sixteen 146GB drives deliver far more parallel I/O than two 1.2TB drives holding the same total capacity.
That design decision is still baked into these systems. Replacing a failed 15K drive with something slower degrades the RAID group to the slowest member, and replacing with a much larger drive strands capacity the array cannot use. Like for like is the correct replacement.
Running an end-of-life platform responsibly
Two things are worth doing if you maintain Integrity systems.
Audit your spares position. Count how many drives of each part number are in service and how many spares you hold. On a platform where the manufacturer no longer supplies parts, a production system with zero spares depends on market availability at the moment of failure — which is not a plan.
Given these are 15K drives that have been running continuously for years, failure is a question of when rather than whether. The drives that have survived this long have also accumulated the most hours.
Know your migration horizon. Parts availability sets a practical end date on the platform. That does not mean migrating now — it means the decision should be made deliberately rather than forced by a failure you cannot source a part for. Organisations that plan the migration while spares are still obtainable have options; those that do not, have an outage.
