HP 430165-002 146GB SAS 10K HDD: ProLiant G-Series Compatibility
HP ProLiant G-series servers — G5, G6, G7 and their contemporaries — were sold in enormous numbers, and a great many are still switched on. HP stopped supplying parts for them years ago, which is the entire reason a 146GB drive from 2007 has an active market in 2026.
The HP 430165-002 is a 146GB SAS 10K 2.5-inch hot-swap drive for those systems.
Why G-series servers are still in service
These machines were built when server hardware was over-specified relative to what most workloads needed, and that has aged well. A G6 or G7 running a file share, a domain controller, a print server or a departmental application is doing a job it does perfectly adequately.
Replacing them requires justification, and "the manufacturer stopped supporting it" is not by itself a business case when the machine works. So they stay, and the constraint becomes parts rather than capability.
The roles where you find them are consistent: branch offices, departmental servers, test and development environments, disaster recovery targets, and organisations where the capital cycle is long. In all of them the machine is useful and the budget for replacing it is elsewhere.
That creates steady demand for drives like this one, and refurbished supply is the only realistic source.

Carrier generations across the HP and HPE eras
HP drive carriers changed more than once, and the branding change from HP to HPE sits roughly in the middle of that history, which adds confusion.
G-series servers of this generation use their own hot-swap carrier design. Later HPE ProLiant Gen8, Gen9 and beyond use Smart Carrier trays, and those are not interchangeable with the earlier design. A Smart Carrier drive will not seat correctly in a G6 or G7 bay.

HP Smart Array controllers validate drive firmware, and they have done so across every generation. On older controllers the behaviour is the same as on current ones.
A non-HP drive may work while being flagged as unsupported in the management tools. It may work without reporting health telemetry correctly, so predictive failure warnings never reach you — and on drives that have been running for over a decade, that warning is genuinely valuable. Or it may be refused during an array rebuild, which is the failure mode that actually costs you data.
For a test system, a generic drive with a scavenged tray is a fair saving. For anything holding data you would miss, ordering by HP part number removes the risk for a small difference.
Practical advice for very old arrays
Drives in these servers have often been spinning continuously for well over a decade. That changes the maintenance calculation in two ways.
Failures cluster. Drives installed together share batch, assembly conditions and accumulated hours. When one goes, the others are at the same point in their life, and the rebuild then puts every survivor under sustained read load for hours — the hardest work an old drive will do. Second failures during rebuild are not unusual on hardware this age.
Backups matter more than the array. On a system this old, treat the RAID array as availability rather than as protection. Verify that whatever backs it up actually restores, because the probability of losing the array is materially higher than on newer hardware.
Holding spares addresses the first. Testing restores addresses the second. Both are cheap relative to what they protect.

Common questions
Can I use an HPE Smart Carrier drive in a ProLiant G6 or G7?
No. G-series servers use an earlier hot-swap carrier design, and Smart Carrier trays from Gen8 onwards will not seat correctly. HP and HPE carriers changed across generations and are not interchangeable.
Why are ProLiant G-series servers still running?
They were over-specified relative to the workloads they carry, so a G6 or G7 running a file share, domain controller or departmental application still does the job. End of manufacturer support is not by itself a business case for replacement.
What happens if I fit a non-HP drive?
