Drive Kits vs Bare Drives: What a Dell or HPE Kit Includes
Drives are sold as bare units and as kits that include the carrier, and the price difference between them causes buyers to choose wrong in both directions. This covers what a kit actually includes and when each is the better purchase.
What is a drive kit?
A drive fitted to the correct carrier for a specific server platform, sold under the server vendor’s part number.
A Dell drive kit is a drive in a Dell carrier for a specific PowerEdge generation. An HPE drive kit is a drive in a Smart Carrier for a specific ProLiant generation. The drive inside is a standard manufacturer drive with the vendor’s firmware coding; the kit is the drive plus the tray plus the coding, ready to slide in.

What is a bare drive?
The drive alone, under the manufacturer’s part number, with no carrier and usually no vendor coding.
A bare Seagate, Toshiba or Samsung drive is the same physical drive that goes into a kit, before the server vendor adds its firmware and tray. It is cheaper for that reason.
What you take on with a bare drive: sourcing the carrier separately, and accepting whatever the controller does with a non-coded drive. Behind an HBA that is nothing. When should I buy the kit?
Four situations where the kit is clearly right.
Adding drives to empty bays. You need carriers anyway. The kit is frequently cheaper than a bare drive plus a carrier bought separately, and it removes the risk of a carrier generation mismatch.
Behind a vendor RAID controller where firmware coding matters. The kit is coded; the bare drive is not.
Procurement that requires vendor part numbers. Some organisations can only buy against a Dell or HPE SKU.

When should I buy the bare drive?
Three situations.
Replacing a drive in an existing carrier. The carrier stays; only the drive changes. Buying a kit means paying for a second carrier you will not use.
Behind an HBA or software-defined storage, where the controller does not validate firmware and coding is irrelevant. Our HBA guide covers this configuration.
Where the bare drive is meaningfully cheaper and you already hold carriers and accept the coding trade.
The honest framing: a kit is a bare drive plus a carrier plus a firmware guarantee. Pay for the parts of that you need.
Do kits include everything I need?
Usually, but check three things.

Form factor matches the bay. A 2.5 inch kit for a 2.5 inch bay; a 3.5 inch kit or a hybrid carrier for a 3.5 inch bay.
Sector format matches the array. Kits are available in different sector formats, and the array must use one throughout — our sector format guide covers this.
And one thing kits never include: blanks for the bays you are not filling. Empty bays need blanks for airflow, and they are a separate part.
How do I compare a kit price against a bare drive price?
Put four things on the same line.
The bare drive plus the carrier (if you need one) plus the risk of a non-coded drive on your controller plus the warranty each carries.

No. The R730 is 13th generation and uses a different carrier. Kit part numbers encode the generation, so order the kit for your exact model rather than a similar one.
Is the drive inside a kit different from the bare drive?
