Almost every printer on a warehouse or laboratory bench prints in one colour: black, by burning a thermal label or transferring black ribbon onto it. When a label needs colour, the usual answer is to buy pre-printed stock from a label converter, hold it in stock, and overprint the variable data in black.
That works until you need forty different colour labels, or the artwork changes, or a regulation updates and you are left holding six months of obsolete pre-printed stock. The Epson TM-C3500 exists to remove that problem. It is a colour label printer that prints the artwork and the variable data together, on plain label stock, at the moment the label is needed. Why colour on demand replaces pre-printed stock
The economics of pre-printed labels are built on volume. A converter sets up a press, runs thousands of labels, and the per-label cost is low precisely because the run is long. That is efficient when you use one design in large quantities for years.
It goes wrong in four predictable ways.
Obsolescence. Artwork changes, regulations update, a product is renamed, a warning symbol is revised. Everything already printed becomes scrap, and the cost of the scrap frequently exceeds what the run saved.
Minimum order quantities. A converter will not run 200 labels economically. If you have many low-volume products, you are forced to order far more of each than you need.
Inventory and storage. Forty pre-printed designs is forty part numbers to hold, count, store, reorder and occasionally pick wrongly. Picking the wrong pre-printed roll produces a correctly printed, completely wrong label, and that is a quality incident rather than a printing error.

Whether that saves money depends entirely on your volume per design, and it very often does not for a single high-volume product. The weight is worth noting. At 26 lbs this is substantially heavier than a thermal desktop label printer, which is normally between 4 and 11 lbs. An inkjet mechanism carries ink cartridges, a maintenance system and a carriage assembly that a thermal printer simply does not have. Plan the bench space accordingly; this is a machine that gets sited once rather than moved between stations.

Most colour label decisions are about branding, and branding is negotiable. Several are not.
Hazard and chemical labelling. Chemical hazard communication systems specify pictograms with a red diamond border. A black-and-white rendering of a red-bordered diamond is not the specified symbol. Operations that mix, decant or repackage chemicals and need compliant labels on the container at the point of decanting are the single most common reason people buy a colour label printer rather than pre-printed stock, because the combination of symbol, product name, batch and date is different on every container.
Colour-coded operational systems. Allergen control in food production, department or zone coding in a warehouse, shift or line identification, cold-chain versus ambient routing. Colour is read faster than text at a distance, and in these systems that speed is the entire point.
Product and shelf presentation. Short-run food products, craft and speciality goods, private label and seasonal packs, where a black thermal label looks like what it is and a colour label looks like a product.
Regulated identification. Laboratory and clinical workflows that use colour to separate sample types, study arms or storage conditions.
If none of those apply to you, a thermal printer is cheaper to buy, cheaper to run and simpler to maintain. Colour is worth paying for when it carries meaning or compliance, not as a general upgrade.
Inkjet versus thermal: the honest comparison
This is a different technology from every other label printer on our shelves, and the trade-offs are real in both directions.
What inkjet gives you. Full colour in a single pass, on plain uncoated or coated label stock rather than special thermal paper. Artwork and variable data printed together. No pre-printed inventory. Output that does not fade the way direct thermal does.
What inkjet costs you. Ink is a consumable with a running cost per label that is higher than thermal paper alone, and cartridges have to be stocked. An inkjet has a maintenance cycle: nozzle checks, cleaning routines and a waste ink system, none of which exist on a thermal printer. Leave an inkjet idle for weeks and nozzles can dry, which is an entire failure mode thermal printers do not have. And ink needs a moment to dry, so labels applied instantly at high speed need the media and applicator matched to that.
What thermal still wins. Speed, simplicity, cost per label on plain black output, and tolerance of being switched off for a month. A SATO CG412DT at 3.7 lbs or a Citizen CL-S521II at 7.9 lbs will out-run this machine on black shipping labels every time.

Running costs: how to work them out before you buy
The mistake people make with colour label printing is comparing the purchase price against a thermal printer and stopping there. Do the arithmetic on the label instead.
Take one representative label design. Work out how many you print a year. Price that quantity three ways: pre-printed colour stock plus black overprinting, colour on demand including ink and blank stock, and plain thermal if colour is genuinely optional. Then add the costs that do not appear on an invoice: obsolete stock written off in the last two years, storage space for pre-printed rolls, and the lead time between artwork approval and first shipment.
Two details change the result more than anything else. Ink coverage determines cost per label, and a label with a large solid colour block costs several times one with a small pictogram and black text; design for coverage and the running cost falls. Number of distinct designs determines how much obsolescence and inventory you were carrying, and this is where on-demand colour usually wins or loses outright.

Practical points before you install one
Media selection is not optional. Inkjet label stock is engineered for ink absorption and dry time. Running thermal label stock through an inkjet produces smeared, slow-drying output, and it is the most common self-inflicted problem with these machines. Confirm your stock is specified for inkjet.
Do not let it sit idle. Print something regularly. A weekly test label costs almost nothing and avoids a nozzle cleaning cycle that consumes far more ink.
Match the label to its environment. Chemical containers, cold storage and outdoor use all need media rated for that exposure. Colour output on the wrong substrate fails in the field even when it prints perfectly on the bench.
