This unit is direct thermal. Heat darkens a coated label directly, so there is no ribbon to buy, thread or run out of mid-shift, and the only consumable is the labels.
That is exactly right for the work this printer is usually bought for: carrier shipping labels, pick and pack labels, despatch documentation, and food date labels. All are read and discarded within days.
What you give up is longevity. Direct thermal output fades with heat, light and abrasion over weeks to months. Two consequences are worth being explicit about.
First, do not use it for asset tags, bin and location labels, or anything stored long term. Those need thermal transfer with a ribbon, and no amount of darkness adjustment changes that.

Refurbished: the two parts that wear
Desktop thermal printers refurbish well because there is little to fail mechanically. Almost all the wear is in two components, and those are what to ask about by name.
The printhead. A consumable rated in length of media printed, and the most expensive single part. On a printer coming out of a busy despatch operation it will have been used. A failing head prints a thin white line down the length of every label, which is burnt-out elements and not a cleaning problem. Ask whether the head has been replaced and what condition it is in.
The platen roller. The rubber roller that drives the media. Wear, flat spots or adhesive build-up cause tracking drift, inconsistent darkness and feed faults, and these are misdiagnosed as printhead problems more often than anything else in thermal printing.
Then confirm the box contents. Power supply, power cable, interface cable and media spindle are commonly missing from refurbished listings across this market, and a printer without its power supply is not a working printer.

Getting the most life out of it
Most thermal printheads die early rather than wearing out, and the reasons are consistent. Abrasive or low-grade label stock is the largest. Darkness set higher than necessary is the second, because every extra degree of heat shortens element life; if output looks faint, check media and pressure before turning darkness up. Skipped cleaning is the third, and a head cleaned at every media change lasts substantially longer than one that is not.
Calibrate after any media change that alters label size or gap type.
