What is the Seagate ST8000VEZ01?

A 3.5 inch, 8TB, SATA 6Gb/s surveillance-class hard drive from the SkyHawk AI family. 7200 RPM class, conventional magnetic recording, built for continuous multi-stream video recording with additional headroom for analytics workloads.

SkyHawk AI vs standard SkyHawk: what is the difference?

Workload rating and design intent.

Standard SkyHawk (VX) is built for recorders writing many camera streams. Its workload rating and stream count suit conventional DVR and NVR use.

SkyHawk AI (VE) adds headroom for analytics: systems that record streams and run AI workloads on the footage at the same time, which means simultaneous heavy reads alongside the continuous writes. Higher workload rating, more supported streams, and firmware tuned for that mixed pattern.

Can I use the ST8000VEZ01 in a NAS or RAID?

With care.

SkyHawk AI drives are designed for multi-bay recorders and carry firmware suited to RAID in that context. But a surveillance drive is still tuned for streaming writes rather than general file serving. For a NAS doing mixed work, a NAS-class or enterprise drive is the better fit. Recorder maximum drive capacity. Older recorders may not support 8TB. Check before buying.
