Surveillance Hard Drives for DVR and NVR: What Differs
Surveillance drives are a separate class from NAS and enterprise drives, built for a workload that is almost entirely continuous writing. This covers what makes them different, when a normal drive fails in a recorder, and which class to buy for a video system.
What is a surveillance hard drive?
A drive designed for the specific workload of a video recorder: many simultaneous write streams, running continuously, with occasional reads.
That is the opposite of a desktop drive’s workload, and different from a NAS drive’s. A recorder with sixteen cameras is writing sixteen streams at once, all day, every day. The drive never rests, and any pause in writing means dropped frames.
Common families are Seagate SkyHawk, WD Purple and Toshiba S300. The names vary; the design goal is the same.
How do surveillance drives differ from NAS and desktop drives?
Four things.
Firmware tuned for streaming writes. Surveillance drives prioritise keeping the write stream flowing over everything else, including error recovery. A short pause to retry a sector is acceptable on a desktop and unacceptable when it drops frames.
Rated for a specific number of camera streams. Datasheets state how many simultaneous streams the drive is designed to handle. Exceed it and frames drop.

Not always designed for RAID. Standard surveillance drives are built for single-drive or simple recorders. Some manufacturers offer RAID-capable variants for larger systems; the standard ones may not have the error recovery behaviour an array needs.
Can I use a desktop drive in a DVR or NVR?
It will work until it does not, and the failure is dropped footage.
A desktop drive in a recorder is being asked to do something it was not rated for: continuous writing. It will run hotter, wear faster, and its error recovery behaviour will occasionally pause the write stream. The footage you lose is the footage you needed, because nobody checks the recorder until something has happened.
The saving is small and the consequence is the whole point of the system. Buy the surveillance class.
Can I use a NAS drive in a surveillance recorder?
Better than desktop, not as good as surveillance class.
NAS drives are rated for continuous operation and have sensible error recovery. What they lack is firmware tuned for many simultaneous write streams. In a small recorder with a few cameras, a NAS drive is fine. In a sixteen-camera system running at high resolution, the surveillance class is the right choice.
The reverse question also comes up: can I use a surveillance drive in a NAS? For a simple file share, yes. For an array, check whether the specific drive has RAID-appropriate error recovery, because the standard surveillance firmware may not.
Which surveillance drive should I buy?
Three things to size.
Camera count. Check the datasheet stream rating against your actual camera count, with headroom for expansion.
Capacity for your retention period. Work out how many days of footage you must keep, at your resolution and frame rate, across all cameras. Recorder manufacturers publish calculators. Our capacity planning guide covers sizing with headroom.
Single drive or array. A single-drive recorder takes the standard class. A multi-drive recorder with RAID needs the RAID-capable variant, and the vendor compatibility list should confirm it.
And one thing worth stating: a surveillance drive is not a backup. When it fails, the footage is gone. For anything where footage retention is a compliance requirement, footage should be exported or replicated. Our backup guide covers the principle.
Replacing a failed surveillance drive
Three practical points.
Match the class, not just the capacity. A desktop replacement in a surveillance recorder recreates the problem above.
Check the recorder’s maximum supported capacity. Older recorders have limits, and a drive larger than the limit may not be recognised or may only use part of its capacity.
Expect footage loss from the failed drive unless the recorder was configured with redundancy. Recovery from a failed surveillance drive is possible but expensive, and rarely worth it unless the footage is evidence.
