What 600 dpi is actually for

Why certified supplies stop being optional at this resolution

Zebra recommends certified media and ribbon across its printer range. At 203 dpi you can often ignore that and get acceptable results from generic stock. At 600 dpi you cannot, and the reason is physical rather than commercial.

A 600 dpi head has three times the element density of a 203 dpi head in the same print line, so each heating element is very small. Small elements are far more sensitive to two things: abrasive particles in the media coating, and inconsistent ribbon thickness. Generic ribbon that varies slightly in coating weight produces uneven heat transfer, and the head compensates by running hotter in places.

The result is not a dramatic failure. It is a head that lasts a fraction of its expected life and fails element by element, producing progressively more dropouts in codes that then fail verification. On a regulated production line, that failure is expensive well before the head is replaced.

For 600 dpi work, the cost difference between certified and generic supplies is almost always smaller than the cost of the printhead it protects.

On a shipping label, a slightly degraded barcode still scans and nobody notices until it does not. In the industries that use 600 dpi printing, codes are usually verified - checked against a grading standard rather than simply scanned.

Keep the darkness setting as low as verification allows. Raising darkness to compensate for weak print is usually treating a media or contamination symptom while accelerating the underlying damage.

Inspect the platen roller frequently for adhesive residue. Uneven pressure across a fine print line damages elements unevenly, and on a 600 dpi head the resulting dropout appears in codes long before it would be visible in text.
